Not exactly a vacation but stopped here on the way back from visiting my mum.

As well as its historical interest Buckfast Abbey is famous for its honey and stained glass.

This stained glass window is enormous. The picture does not do it justice. Each piece of glass is handcut and very chunky measuring several inches across and at least an inch thick. There was an exhibition on showing how they made the panels. Normally I would have been out wondering the grounds but the weather was just too horrendous to stay outside unfortunately.

What a pretty place. Their blurb about the bees was very interesting.

Great photos, Moira, and some of the reasons why I love England.

I especially like that second pic. I have a whole collection of doors and doorways that I've taken but never put together. I don't know why they fascinate me so much.

BTW, every citizen of England should read "Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett, IMHO. It's a huge book, but a real page-turner. It's a fictional story based on how the architecture of cathedrals began in England. Sounds very dry, but trust me it is everything but! And Follett did his research very well before the writing.
