There were many more plants and features to see at Longwood, but because I was visiting with non-gardeners, I tried not to be obsessive about seeing everything. I do hope to visit the gardens again. We ate at the Longwood cafeteria and the food was very good--the chocolate cake I had for dessert was superb! There is also a more formal dining room. The gift shop was filled with wonderful gifts for gardeners--I could have spent a long time just looking around, but spared my DH. He bought a pair of dragonfly earrings and a stainless steel hand weeder for me that I coveted! Longwood has many outdoor (and indoor) water features. The main fountains include over 300 fountains and spouts. They have a few shows every day, including a lighted one some evenings. We didn't see that, but it must be beautiful.
Another beautiful group of outdoor fountains is the Italian water garden.
Other fountains were 'choreographed' to music.
There were so many more beautiful, planted beds than I have photos of, as well as topiaries, waterfalls, many more plants within the conservatory including hibiscus, bonsai, espaliered fruit trees, palms, ferns, tropical plants, etc. Here are a couple of plantings that I admired.

Cherylle, the gardens are in the state of Pennsylvania near Philadelphia. The property was once owned by industrialist Pierre S. DuPont and here is a link to their webpage with virtual tours if you want to see more of it. It is worth a visit if you are ever in the area. http://www.longwoodgardens.org/Tour/Introduction/Introduction.htm

We are leaving on a trip across the country next Tuesday, headed for Massachusetts, and our path will take us fairly close to Pittsburgh. I hope we have a chance to visit the Longwood Gardens. You make a good cheerleader for this place, Marcia. I'm determined to get there if at all possible.

I must admit I am not a huge fan of Longwood. I am just biased I'm sure! I think the one thing that is great there is all the fountains and the last time I went they were closed due to construction! What a let down. So it is nice to see your photos. One of my favorite things about Longwood actually is their water plants (water lilies, etc. in their pools.) so beautiful and accessible. One of the few things I think they do much better then NYBG or Kew. I have mixed feelings about their annual borders. While I think they are better then anything that NYBG has done lately I don't think they are designed very well. Oooh listen to me being all raggedy about Longwood. I'm sure someone who graduated from the Longwood horticulture school would have similar things to say about NYBG.

Anne, the gardens are near Philadelphia, which is on the eastern side of PA. (Pittsburgh is in western PA. There is Phipps Conservatory nearby, but I understand there is some construction going on there. I haven't been to visit it for several years. Their website is http://www.phipps.conservatory.org/) Hope you get a chance to stop at Longwood. Kaveh, because I have visited few botanical gardens, I was impressed with both Longwood and Hershey gardens. Of course, you've had more experience with such places than I have. I have a few photos of water plants on another post about Longwood. It was one of my favorite spots.

I've just looked up Phipps Conservatory, and the website says, "Phipps remains open during construction with easy access through the Fern Room." It looks very interesting now, and it will be top rank when the planned work is completed. Thank you, Marcia. Now, I just need some gardens to visit in North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin!
