First year growing this beautiful single fuchsia Kath. Do you think I could try to grow her on as a Bonsia. Spent some time with my fuchsias this morning before Hospital visit in afternoon. Can see my fuchsias have been neglected as I have forgotten to give them their usual feed. Is it now too late in the season to feed.I just have not had the time to tend to my fuchsias with running to and fro to the hospital. This year through the winter months hope to try to keep some of my fuchsias in my heated conservatory. Should I still be giving them a drink even though it is the rest period and how often and how much please Kath.

Chang is a lovely flower for a bonsai. If that plant were mine, I would remove the right hand stem completely as a 'Y' shape is not very good for a bonsai tree. Then cut the remaining 3 stems back to the 2nd 'break' from the bottom on each of same. This will encourage it to shoot lower down. Then pinch the new growth after 2 pairs of leaves have formed. I don't feed anymore now until next March. If you are going to over winter plants in your heated conservatory, they will shoot new growth very quickly after cutting back, keep them moist but don't overwater throughout the winter.

Can you draw step by step diagram please Kath and certainly happy to try. Would I pot it down into a smaller pot Kath?

Where the red line is, completely remove. Where the blue lines are, cut back each stem just above the node. Then take out of the pot and replant back into that same pot but at more of an upright angle. Normally we do pot-down for the winter, but not plants intended for bonsai, reason being you need to firstly build up a good root structure to supply the plant with maximum energy/strength. In the Spring go up another pot size, this encourages the main stem to thicken, and that is the main objective in the first few years. Don't be in a hurry to plant into a bonsai pot, otherwise the main stem will be very slow to thicken. The freer the root-run the quicker it will thicken, that is why a lot of mine 'in-training' get planted into the garden for a few years, of course the non-hardy types have to be potted up for the winter and kept in the heated greenhouse.

You're welcome Kath. Very busy day for me, our villiage annual Horticultural Society Show today, I don't compete in the classes anymore but always do a big display of Fuchsia Bonsai for them, creates a lot of interest from the public. Temps were 28c/82f, not a cloud in the sky, perfect day

Hi Kath here is Chang just wanted to enjoy the pleasure of the last of her delightful blooms. Sadly at our fuchsia club show I had chang in a 6"pot and had wrongly entered in class which should have been a 5"pot. Too much going on in my mind just silly mistake. Yes I want to try now to train as a Bonsia . Does this photo give you a better idea for step by step instructions for me.

What a shame it was in the wrong size pot for the show, but understandable, I've done the same thing earlier days, especially when I was entering a lot. Yes Kath follow the above instructions, you will find, because it has quite a long space between the nodes, that you have to pinch out the new growing tips after every pair of leaves that form to keep it more compact.

Remove those larger leaves, keep cool and only slightly moist throughout the winter, and keep pinching out the growing tips as I suggested above

As I can't see the end of the branch on the right, make sure you only have 3 'breaks' on it like the left one, if there is more, shorten the branch back to the 3rd break. Pinch off any flower buds so that all the strength goes to the plant and encourages more leaf shoots. Through the winter months, when any new stems start to grow, pinch back to 2 pairs of leaves, try to keep the plant as compact as possible.
