Hi Kath, would you please review with me your preparations for winterizing your fuchsia? I want to make sure I've remembered this correctly from last year. I've dug the ones out of the garden, cut them back, stripped the leaves and am going to leave them in the garage until it gets a bit colder. My basement is still in the 60's and I know they won't go dormant at those temps. How much cold can they take? My standard I cut the branches by half and took off all the really thin branches and also stripped off the leaves. When I bring that out in spring and re-pot do you have any advice for potting mixes etc. I actually killed a couple of my plants this spring and I'm thinking I kept them too wet when they were first repotted. So when you repot you water sparingly? If you have any photographs of your winter pruned fuchsias I'd appreciate seeing what you do with yours. Thanks!!!

Hi Deanne, So sorry I haven't answered earlier, don't know why I missed your posting, another senior moment 1.How much cold can they take? As you've only recently potted them up, in the garage no less than 41f. 2. Potting mix. I always add at least a third of small grit to the potting medium, this gives good drainage. For 'stadards' a little more grit won't hurt. Yes water sparingly after re-potting, just around the inner edge of the pot is a good idea, so as to keep the stems a bit drier. Here is my mix
A cut back fuchsia, potted up and ready for winter, you could even cut back further, ie another third off.

Thanks so much! I really appreciate the information and the photographs. I guess I'm doing things correctly. I couldn't believe when I dug a couple plants out of my large hay racks that the plants had gotten about three feet tall. They are lovely and huge and are now pruned back and nestled in their winter homes. This fuchsia thing is a true addiction and I can see where my plant habit will outstrip my available storage space! LOL Thanks again. Oh yes, I have to tell you how amazed everyone here was with my fuchsias this year. You cannot find any plants the size of the ones I'd wintered over and when I told them I had a friend on the internet who showed me how to winterize my plants they were excited to try it themselves. So your wonderful information is being spread around here also. Isn't Gb's great????

Nice to know you're 'Spreading the word' in respect of the fuchsias Deanne, the longer you can keep them going through the winter each year, the bigger they will grow the following summer
