Hallo garden fans : this is my first mail - I registered today. I collect fuchsias (and am also fond of hostas!) Last autumn a few of my fuchsias were infected with rost, probably by new plants that I ordered thru a mail order catalogue! Any tips for me on treatment?

Hydrogen peroxide as it comes from the bottle; just find a spray head that will fill the bottle and go to it. Got bugs: Dilute rubbing alcohol 30% and nail them.

Welcome from me also - GB is a great site, there is much to learn here! Rost on fuchsia's: as you live in Germany it must be easy for you to get a product of Bayer against it. But if you use it, the fuchsia let fall much of the leaves. Another great helper is Glassex from Reckit. Spray it under the leaves,(there is where you see the rost) and your fuchsia will recover without the leaves fall off. Gerda

Yikes! Fuchsia's get rust! Crud my roses have it and I have been ignoring it just allowing the leaves to fall off since I have to cut off the leaves anyway also I have been too busy to care for them. My fuchsia seems unaffected but now I better check when I get home!! The rust spores get in the soil and it will come back every year, I treat my roses with a 3-n-1 systemic fertilizer and it still gets it. You can control it some tho but I haven't been able to get rid of it completely without stripping the leaves and then of course picking them up. I put plastic under the plant to catch the leaves to help reduce the number of spoors that get in the soil, not sure it helps but it doesn't hurt.

Yes it's been quite a bad summer for rust here in Europe, especially with the exceptional heat of July. Definitely remove any leaves with the orange postules on the underside of the leaves and pick up from the soil as soon as possible, spray with appropriate product available in your area. I find a watering of the soil around the plant with diluted Armillatox also helps.
