The mother plant did not come back this year but this is a seedling of hers.

"Do they die off?" Not usually Arlene, I treat them a bit like fuchsias here in zone 8. I never trim them back in the Autumn when having a 'tidy-up', I wait until late spring when all risk of frost has gone. Anyway, that's a nice seedling

Maybe my lawn service crew is the cause. I never cut these back in the fall and I came home one day and noticed it chopped to the ground.

That's probably the answer Arlene, then over the winter period the frost probably got into the 'crown' of the plant and killed it. Tell the 'lawn service crew' to be more careful, of course in the nicest possible way
