I like them because they flower from May right through the summer until the frosts come in Oct/Nov. Treat them a bit like hardy fuchsias during the winter period, don't cut them back until all risk of frost has gone the following Spring, and then only to 12 inches/25 cms. There are quite a few Penstemons that are hardy and do well here in Colorado, but it almost looks as if there are more varieties available in Europe than in the US where they are native! I confess to being envious. Those you posted are beautiful, Kath. I've not seen them offered in the USA; I will have to do a search! Here is a very nice UK site about Penstemons: http://www.penstemania.co.uk/plantindex.htm I just "discovered" it but folks here are probably already familiar with it.
