'Hidcote Pink'
It is apparently hardy in parts of Austria with similar winter temperatures to here - but with snow cover, which we rarely get. I think I'll give it some kind of winter protection; I'd hate to lose these pretty pink flowers.

Very pretty. I planted one last summer that flowered this year. It was blue/purple. I got some seeds from it. Do you know if the seeds need a cold spell to germinate.

Joan, I don't know about growing Penstemon from seeds. This one is a hybrid, so that probably wouldn't be an option. Yours must have been a very hardy penstemon - do you know the name?

That's a beauty Mara. I suggest leaving the old stems on until next Spring and covering the crown of the plant with a mulch before frosts arrive. It is 'borderline' in respect of hardiness. Could you not take some semi-ripe cuttings in case it doesn't survive? Joan, the border perennnial(larger types) seed needs a temp of between 13-18c (55-64f) to germinate, I've found it takes best when sown in Spring. The seed of the smaller rockery types are best sown late winter in containers, with protection of a cold frame.

Kath, have you ever taken semi-ripe cuttings from penstemons? Is there anything special that needs to be considered? Do they grow quickly? According to most of the websites I found, this penstemon has practically no chance of surviving a North European (wet) zone 7a winter. I did add lots of gravel to its soil and I intend to protect it, but still have no great hopes. The Austrian nurseryman I bought it from claimed his survived outdoors with no protection at all except what snow-cover affords. A good sell, but I don't believe him.

I would agree Mara, maybe in a sheltered spot with protection it might survive, but in the open with no protection, Hmmm don't think so. Yes, I have taken semi ripe cuttings. Each one between 7-8cm. long. I dip the ends in hormone rooting powder at this time of year, mainly because it has a bit of fungicide in. I put 6 or 7 into a 4 inch pot containing a sandy type potting compost and water them in. After that I keep them just moist and place on a propagator at 15c/50f.

No Mana, don't know the name and have no picture. It was a small plant in a 2" pot just marked mixed penstemon. Planted last Fall. Didn't grow much more than 6" tall, but had pretty flowers.

Reporting back to say Penstemon 'Hidcote Pink' came through the winter - with a little protection - perfectly. Even kept its leaves. So it would seem to be hardier than I thought. It started flowering a couple of days ago:

Oh that is good news Mara, such a pretty colour, mine are also just starting to open. They were all behind due to the cold weeks of May, but this past week we have had temps in the 30c's and the extra heat has made them burst forth into flower. I'm glad they have because we have our Annual Open Gardens Weekend this coming weekend. Hoping for a wee bit cooler weather
