Hi all,
I'm new to Penstemons and was wondering if anyone could tell me about P. Phoenix Fire. Is this an annual or perennial? I was given some plants from a garden show, but the plant tag doesn't give any info other than the variety name.

I am sorry to see that no one has answered your post. I love Penstemons but this forum seems to be very inactive, to say the least! I have been unable to find this particular cultivar of the Phoenix series, and there seems to be little information about the 'Phoenix' penstemons in general. I did read some information about another cultivar in the series, 'Apple blossom.' According to the site, this cultivar's main derivation is from the border penstemons, Penstemon gloxiniodes. If this is correct, it is obviously pretty tender. I would treat your plant as an annual and see how it does! If it is like the 'Apple blossom,' presuming here that all of the Phoenix series has gloxinoides in their ancestry, than it definitely is not hardy in Zone 5.

Here is some info about Penstemon gloxinoides: http://www.desert-tropicals.com/Plants/Scrophulariaceae/Penstemon_gloxinioi des.html
