penstemons will be my first attempt at gardening. from what i can tell they are pretty hardy. i think i may order them online if i can"t find them locally. if so, any advice as to whether seeds or buying a whole plant is better? planting advice? I was thinking either Huskers Red or 'Penstemon barbatus coccineus' or the Red Rocks ones.

Huskers Red was one of the plants I started with when I began gardening. Very easy to grow, low maintenance plant. Beautiful flowers and bronze-red foliage. I highly recommend it.

They need good drainage. They don't like wet feet. I usually loose mine in the winter due to rain not cold.

Worth taking cuttings from in case you do lose a plant in the winter (or just to have more!). The cuttings take very easily.
