My name is Kellie and I am a penstemaniac.
There. I actually said it. There is just something about these plants that call to me. For the first few years I collected the named hybrids and now I am into the species big time. They are so rewarding for the small amount of time and attention they require, and they thrive on the form of "tough love" I practice.

I love them too and I'm disappointed I never got a very tiny yellow one planted this summer. I did plant it but it might have been very dead. Bought it in Ashland, Oregon while on vacation and then got caught up in building my koi pond. Plus plant swaps etc.

I sure hope I see it at the nurseries this year.
But I love penstemons. Also Hyssop (sp?)

Kellie! You are a Penstemaniac! I must confess, my name is Bruce and I am a plantaholic. YES! I feel better already!

So, what Penstemons are your favorites?

Oh, gosh, Bruce! Plant Lust are us!!

Right now I am really loving penstemon davidsonii which is native here. Low, tight, creeping and the coolest purple flower! I reserve judgement on penstemon smallii. It really is nice in bloom, but out of bloom it looks just like one of our weeds and I can't tell you how many times I have tried to rip it out! As far as the large flowered hybrids, Rich Ruby is my current drool plant, although I remember feeling the same way about Blackbird, Raven, Garnet, etc, etc,etc,..........
Karalyn, it sounds like you had Mersea Yellow, which is a yellow flowered form of the pine-leaf penstemon. I just got one of those this year called Shades of Mango as it has the orange, red and yellow all mixed up, giving it the same color as a ripe Mango! Check out the penstemon pictures on www.JOYCREEK.com. Another one of my favorite penstemon sources is www.HighCountryGardens.com
Just for the fun of it, I'll count them all someday. Maybe not. I might scare myself!!

Thanks, Kellied,

I will look for that. I got my first from a watergarden club buddy that was the red kind maybe your Rich Ruby. Not sure but it is one tough plant. But I planted it next to my irrigation pond and it got lost with all the other stuff that grow near there. Plus maybe my round up did it in. sigh....

But I have this really pretty one near the irrigation pond but not next to it that blooms every year and hardly gets any attention. It is planted near Okay..it has left me. A bluish/purple heat loving plant that looks like it belongs in the desert. I'll remember it later. Anyway, I'm going to check your websites.

Okay, I went to one of them, the high country one as they send me catalogs a lot of the time.

I'm in love. There are few there that I just gotta have. I'll check first our local nurseries since we are considered near high country. Teehee

I love my penstemon too! I have the electric blue that is low growing, grape ice, and a few others that I need to find the name to. I will post pics when I figure out how to do it here.
Kellie, I am with you! They are so easy to grow. I also have lots of nice daylilies and they go nice together.}}

Well. When I visited Gardenbug this summer, she gave me a dozen Red Huskers seedlings that she had grwon from seed. They were tiny guys, and now they are in 3" pots growing on in the greenhouse. I don't have any, so I can see that this may become a serious affliction, just like I caught the clematis bug here at Gardenbuddies.

What conditions do these plants like?

Hi Kellie, I'm a penstemon lover too, if you go back to my thread 'Penstemon' on the board, you'll see some of my favourites. Wonderful plants, flower all summer long. They're not fussy Julie, I have found that the flowers last longer and don't fade if planted in semi shade. Just give them a good feed in late Spring and away they go

I still have some penstemons that I bought not too long ago at a 50% off sale. They are still in their 4 inch pots along with foxglove, a fern, a hardy geranium, creeping phlox, etc. Oh, I think a yellow Maltese Cross, I could be wrong on that. So I guess I better get busy!

It is snowing right now, but melting. The ground is soft so I'll see what I can get done. I'm not going overboard on Christmas this year as my heart isn't into it much and I don't see my sons helping that much either. But I know it will get done, even if I don't use all my Christmas decor this year.

I am heading out to Home Depot and will drop by my son's grave and put the Christmas decorations near his headstone. They are really cute and fit him perfectly. He was my Christmas Spark, so I guess that is why I'm not getting much done here.

But I feel peaceful, so that is the main thing.
