I have 8 very healthy looking lavender to plant. Last year they didn't make it over winter. I'm thinking south facing and protected??? any hints

can u bring them inside in containers or pieces of them to save some just in case your idea still leads to demise?

Nighs, I think your idea is possibly the best for your zone. Make sure they have absolutely perfect drainage, don't fertilize them at all (makes them hardier, and they don't need it), make sure they have maximum winter sun (and reflected heat from a south-facing wall will bump you up as much as two zones!), and mulch well over winter but don't prune til spring. For northern climates, don't try L. stoechas (Spanish lavender) or L. dentata or L. pinata (fringed lavenders). The most hardy are the English lavenders (L. angustifolia) and some of the hydrids (L. x intermedia) such as Grosso and Provence.
