There are fields behind my house as far as the eye can see and a lady started a lavender farm a few years ago. She sells the products she makes at our local farmers markets. This year because of our awful weather the field didn't look so good so these pictures are from last year. Hope you like

You must feel as though you are in the south of France! I can barely imagine the scent on a sunny day. What a gorgeous view - of the lavender fields and beyond.

I love lavender...you must be able to sleep a wonderfully peaceful sleep with the heavenly scent entering your bedroom windows. What a beautiful sight! I have a few small patches of it.. I cannot imagine the luxury of acres of it!

Wonderful! I did lie down in the middle of it for a while. DJ I was wondering if growing lavender would be an option for you. It would like your growing conditions but does it count as an agricultural crop?
No such luck. It is three fields away on the other side of the hill unfortunately.

Oh, how I wish! I have yet to get any to grow from seed. I'm also pretty sure it would be considered horticultural instead of agricultural. I spend a lot of time wishing this place was hort instead of ag. Thank you for the suggestion, though. Got any more? HAHA!!

Thankyou for the comments everyone. I do feel lucky living as I do on the edge of a town. If I were to turn the camera round and show you the view from the other direction you wouldn't be so impressed!

That is incredible! How beautiful - what a view! There is an herb farm about an hour away that sells a lot of lavender but their lavender looks nothing like that. Personally I have problems overwintering it.

I think it has a lot to do with the positioning of the fields Loretta. She chose wisely using the slope to catch the most sun. I noticed this year that she is trying rosemary as well but it all looks a bit sorry for itself because of all the rain we have had. Maybe next year it will be worth taking a picture of it.

Hi Susan. Are you new? Have I already said hello? If not....Hello I am hoping to get some decent shots this year as long as we get a summer. I stopped and had a long chat with the lady who grows it the other day. She has a shop nearby now where she sells things made from it. I have to go back at sometime as she had a recipe book for sale that was full of great ideas on how to use lavender in cooking. Not something I have tried before.

Hi, Miss Growit. Nice to make your acquaintance. No, we haven't met, yet, on here. But, I have seen many of your posts. I'd love to have a lavender farm. I can only imagine what I could do with my soaps if I had fresh lavender. It would really add to the appearance of them, as well as give off some really good healing and fragrant benefits. Thank you for greeting me. That was very nice of you.

Yasmeen how are you felling now? Better I hope.
What do you want from the lavender you want to grow? Do you want to dry it and use it? Grow it as a hedge? Eat it? They grow to different heights, there are different colours. All depends what you want it for. In your climate I doubt you would have hardiness issues lol!

My personal favourite is augustifolia 'Hidcote'. It is a richer purple/blue than some of the more popular varieties. It stands well too. It is easy to strip for drying as the heads are nice and compact.

I have never purposefully grown from seed but my lavender hedge selfseeds quite readily in my dry chalky soil. As for speed I don't know. My seedlings are flowering in 2 years but obviously just a few spikes and are still quite small plants.
