I started my Germander in 2004. I had wanted to create a knot garden with it, but the ground around here turned out to be rather difficult to work, so I just planted my seeds in a couple of patches in the front yard. It is perennial in my zone and likes to run, but it is easily pulled and kept in bounds. It is relatively short, about 6"-12". Mine is obviously allowed to grow au naturale until spring, at which point I trim off all of the dry brown sprigs to make room for new growth, but it can be kept trimmed all year long to form box edging for gardens. I thought I'd share pix of mine since it seems to be a fairly unknown and underused plant. Bees love it.

I hope that remains the case. I've had it for about 20 years in the garden and have lost all control of the situation. It runs, I pull, it runs faster. But it is pretty and seems to be content to grow in difficult situations.

I hope so, too. With the climate the way it has been lately, maybe in the next 20 years I'll be upgraded to your zone and I'll have to edit my post. LOL! I've already supposedly been moved up to Zone 6, but with the endless wind and the lack of snow cover (like this last winter), I think the winters are still at least as bad as Zone 5, if not worse.

The teucriums do well here, though I'm not growing it at the moment. You could move through a lotta zones without it dying off I reckon!

Looks lovely DJ and I agree it is underused. I had a devil of a job getting hold of it when I managed a nursery. My suppliers said it was not a popular herb so they didn't bother to grow many. Every single one I bought sold! I think it must be more a case of retail outlets not giving it the room it needs to grow so it always looks scruffy and they can't sell it.

It plays nice against your liatris and coneflowers! And it's nice to find something different for this time of year.

I grew germander years ago from seed,DJ and when we moved to the farm for some reason neglected to plant it again. Yours is lovely and I will be getting it back into the gardens next summer. Another plant we have in common.
