Thought I would start this thread again, since my other one is missing for some reason. I collected 5 pods today, I counted 66 seeds. I have well over 200 seeds so far, and many more pods to still collect. I picked up Strawberry Fields Forever the other day, $6.49 what a bargain. I have wanted that one for awhile. About a month ago I picked up Blueberry Candy, and some others I can't remember off hand. I will be crossing those two for sure.

My goodness Guff, I don't know how you manage all these projects! Growing the cyclamen and hellebores along with a few other things seems to be all I can handle. Those are nice daylilies.

Ebay, if you like to bid, like I do. I find that you can get some super deals, if you play the waiting to last min to bid game. In the past few months I have watched Strawberry Fields Forever sell from anywheres $12-25, all depends who's watching and bidding. If you go to www.lilyauction.com they have a lot there as well. I received a daylily mail order catalog maybe 4 months ago, and they wanted $50 for Strawberry Fields Forever. TerryK, it isn't so much work really, they grow themselves, I just get to enjoy the pretty flowers. I will be buying some expensive ones $100+, maybe 2-3 plants a year, to do crosses with. I will be more then happy to trade, when of course I have extras fans. I will be starting new project next spring, I just purchased 300 tulips bulbs, to try crossing, making seeds. I read it take 3 years to flower from seeds for tulips. I had some years ago out in the yard, but they died out. I picked up purple and white, I thought that would be pretty.

Here's just an example of a cross called Margin of Difference. Maybe this will inspire others. It may take you 100-1000 seedlings, but it's a gamble, and a surprise. I think thats what draws me to this so much, you just never know what you will get, being a mystery. Margin of Difference was a seedling created from Strawberry Fields Forever and Royal Braid Strawberry Fields Forever

Cross breeding and all that seems so difficult for me right, i am just learning about daylilys myself. I think that would be too much info on my mind at the moment. But i tell ya those new varieties they are coming up with!! Man they are gorgeous! Keep them coming!!

Guff, are you trying to get me to slide down another path in gardening-maybe when I retire. As it is I practically live down in my basement doing planting/transplanting. Darn that day job that keeps getting in the way of gardening. E-bay is like this web site, the more I see the more I want...

I think I will see if I can find a Royal Braid, and cross it to my Strawberry Fields Forever next summer. Maybe I will get some pretty babies. Crossing is the easy part, it only takes a second. The rest is time, luck and a good eye. TerryK it seems I'm always adding a new project, something always catches my eye. Crossing daylily's is a fun rewarding hobby.

I'm wondering If anyone has any tips on keeping pollen for long periods, I plan on putting pollen I collect into small plastic packets, to use throughout the season, since they may flower at all different times. It would be great if you could just buy pollen of the newer expensive ones, or is there such a place that sells pollen? Maybe we could make a thread to trade pollen come next summer. That would save a lot, since you wouldn't need such and such plant in hand, you could just trade for some pollen.

I believe that Bruce and Joseph from the hellebore forum have done work with pollen. I am not sure if it is something that would hold true for Daylilies. Here's some past posts from the hellebore forum which may help you. Otherwise, maybe you can contact Bruce for some info. http://www.gardenbuddies.com/cgi-bin/forum/search.cgi Hope it helps.

You got some good lilies to cross. I see some of these used a lot in breeding. Love that Margin of difference.Alto most of my crosses did not take this year, weather I think,I have been playing on the auction and have 200 seeds to plant next year, and all winter to play and get more. They have a bunch on now starting for $5.00 and some not even bid on. This year I think I will try starting some in the house, see if I can keep them going all winter. I have taken pollen ,when it is dry and fluffy and just put it in foil and freeze, this works for me most of the time. I think it could be put in small containers of some kind ,freeze well also. You can buy containers for this purpose on the lily auction sometimes but they are expensive.Guff I am interested in what $100+ lillies you would like to buy. I would recommend Ed Brown, one of the best and most used pollen parents. and he is not very expensive but throws some gorgeous babies.

It seems a lot of the newer daylily's are all over a hundred some much more closer to two. But I guess they come down in a couple years. I have wondered how much the daylily's that I have bought were when they were first released, like Strawberry Fields Forever, I bet that was 100-150 lily. I would like to get Happy Halloween, Halloween is my favorite holiday. I would also like BELLA SERA, I like purples a lot. I have a lot of learning and reading to do. One can go over board with so many pretty daylily's. Happy Halloween
