Heres my first attempt growing daylily's from seed. I know they are too close, this was just a test run and to gain some experience.

Well, I been thinking about starting some seeds, so I took one of my Simply Sensational X Bella Sera packets(7 seeds), and have them soaking. This seedling is from a seed pod, that had a germinated seed in it. I didn't label what it is. Seems there is another fan forming already.

One seed of Simply Sensational X Bella Sera, has germinated. I put the other seeds back in the fridge for a couple days, and will try again. I did let them go for about 3 weeks, before returning to the fridge, very stubborn.

Simply Sensational X Bella Sera update. I'm up to 8 seedlings now, 1 seed still needs to germinate. I need to get these transplanted soon.

WOW! Daylilies are my favorite bloomer of all and it seems that many of you love them, too. I have many of different varieties. I can never decide which is my favorite. I do like Wild One. This is the first photo I could find. Does anyone grow it?

PS: I did try some crossing for the first time this past season. I am axious to see wht I get. I used two of my favorite 'unnamed' varieties. So I guess if I am successful, I can name it what I want to. I'll keep you posted on my success. I just recently took the seeds out of the fridge and started the germinating process. Hope it works.

Blumz, good luck with the seed. I can't wait to see what mine produce as well. Being in NY and a short growing season, I have a feeling I'm going to have a 3 year wait, before I see a flower. The above seedlings took a long time to germinate. When I start more seed in April, I'm going to make sure they get a week cold chill in the fridge with a paper towel soaked in water. Seems that extra moisture in the bag does the trick to get them to germinate faster.

Guff, my seeds were in the fridge for several months. I had intended to leave them there only a couple of weeks, but I forgot about them. That may affect my success. Several years ago, when I knew absolutely NOTHING about gardening, much or less daylilies, I undertook to see if I could grow Stella d'Oro from seed .. just as an experiment. To my surprise I was successful, but it did take probably 3 years before I saw a bloom. Now I know that no one who knows anything about daylilies would try and start Stella from seed. She spreads so quickly anyway. But it was just an experiment. Division is the way I multiply all of mine, but this year, I just decided to try my hand at cross breeding. When I try it next season, I'll use your tip of moist paper towel in the bag. Did you nick you seeds before planting them?

Blumz, I meant only put the damp paper towel in for a week before you want to start your seeds. It helps with stubborn seeds. I store my seeds in the fridge also , after 1 or 2 day of drying. I try to keep them moisture free, because mold starts to grow.

Guff, thanks for clearing that up. When I took mine out of the fridge, I nicked the seeds slightly, soaked them for several hours in water, then put them into the soil. I followed the instructions from Oakes Daylilies in Knoxville, Tennessee ... where I purchase most of mine. Of course, they didn't tell me to refrigerate them as long as I did. How long did it take yours to show signs of germination?

Blumz, my first seed germinated after about 10 days or so, the others I returned back to the fridge after 3 weeks of no germination. When I tried them again, one or two would germinate a week. Still waiting for my last seed of the cross to germinate. The seed looks and feels good still, so I have hope.

Guff, I noticed in the photos of your germinated seeds that the seeds themselves are on top of the soil. Is that what you did with them? Or did they push themselves up when they started emerging? I have mine very loosely covered with soil.

Blumz, I germinated the seeds in a paper towel, inside a plastic bag. Once they germinate, I take a tooth pick, and make a small hole in the dirt. I then drop in the seed, root shoot down. I ask the question last year, about the seed coat being at/about soil surface level, and never received an answer. It seemed to work well for me, so I will continue to do that. My first attempt growing from seed last year, I did germinate them in soil. Some seed coats would push up towards the surface, while others didn't. So I really don't know if it really matters, as long as your soil has good drainage.

The last seed of Simply Sensational X Bella Sera has finally germinated. I think around late April, I will be starting more seeds.

Congratulations, Guff! I started several seeds early last week --- both in the soil, and in the damp paper towel/plastic bag like you suggested. Mine are under light, with a heating pad underneath them. No sight of germination yet, but it's been only 7 days. I hope I get at least ONE sprout!

Guff, My first hand pollinated Tetras should flower this Summer, their 3rd year. I was hoping for flowers last season. They did grow to a good size, though. I planted 5 in a brand new flower bed without knowing their colors. I now have 2 and 1 year old seedlings in the nursery with more seed waiting to be planted this Spring.

Andy_p, can't wait to see your pictures. Blumz, thanks, sometimes they take a long time to germinate. I'm sure they will germinate for you. I like Tet seeds myself, Dip's seeds never look like they are any good.

I soak my seeds in water for a few days and most of them will sprout in the water ,then I plant. Last year I started some in the basement under shop lights in Oct. and out of 100 ,10 of these bloomed, I was very lucky. and really happy about them blooming in the first year since I don't have a greenhouse.I plant them in large soda bottles, which results in a very big root system and fertilize them about every 3 weeks. My basement is very cool and they seem to like it that way. This year I have almost 150 started in basement and they are doing great. A couple that bloomed first year.
