Bruce, I especially like Chicago Apache. Do you or anyone else know the origin of the "Chicago" series? I'm from that area and just curious about it. Such fun for me to see "what's blooming now" all around the world!

I love the Chicago series, in fact was going to mention Chicago Silver as another late bloomer. I was thrilled this year to find a plant labelled Chicago Picotee Lace but with one mangled bloom that was obviously not that. When I got it home and started looking for a match it was obvious it was really Chicago Coral and it is beautiful! http://www.plantations.cornell.edu/publications/IthacaJournalArticles/Dazzl ing_Daylilies.cfm http://www.whitehouseperennials.com/03catalogue/03b_ae.htm There's a very nice writeup of Marsh's work here - it's continued on page 29 which you can read by clicking on the blue arrow at the top of the page. http://books.google.com/books?id=TA-lXxQAdcMC&pg=PA28&lpg=PA29&ots=NDQ-gTbk gT&dq=daylily+chicago+series&sig=BJDbKTFv3iGG5ySa5OCimRA0cE0

Alison, Thank you so much for the links. I ordered the book by Peet etal. Very interesting reading. I noticed that a lot of the Chicago series dls are dormant and I wonder how they would do in our 7b zone. Chicago Apache is so appealing, but not sure if he'd survive well here. I know dormants work well for you in the frozen north ; - )

My garden is fairly quiet on the daylily front. However, I do have a few stragglers that push out a bloom from time to time. I have tons of daylily pics on my website if you care to view them. Unfortunately they were bought from a farm and I do not have all the names. If anyone can name some of them it would be most appreciated. (See the photo album section). So, Ingmarie, is your Gypsy Queen on a trellis and this bloom is at the bottom, or is it allowed to scramble among the daylilies? I'm trying to figure the best siting for my clematis. Such an interesting color combination, Summer Wine and Gypsy Queen - really ready for a wild party!

Finally my new Black Eyed Stella has its first bloom ever. I know it's a relatively old variety, but new to this garden. I ordered one from Gilbert H. Wild and Sons way last fall, but it died almost as soon as I planted it. I ordered another from Hill Gardens of Maine early this spring and planted it in the same spot. It has been really healthy, but is just now blooming. I expect a lot of it, as it is supposed to be one of the very longest blooming daylily in cultivation.
Also blooming today: h. fulva, Stella de Ora, Dainty Eyes, Fat Lady Sings, August Flame, and Happy Returns. Not bad for the middle of August. I intend to fertilize all my daylilies next week, hoping that some of my new rebloomers will do their thing again.

Alice, Thanks for the update. Black Eyed Stella is very pretty. Is the blossom as small as Stella's or larger? No, not bad at all for the middle of August. I have my First Ever rebloom stalk. I believe it's Barbara Mitchel but won't know until it opens - just the stalk and buds right now. I just threw rose food in my daylily bed - before a rain : ) What do you use?

Black Eyed Stella is a bit larger than Stellas, Berry. I use a little Miracle Grow to fertilize them.
