Hello and Merry Christmas }}to all, Last summer I purchased 2 different types of Hibiscus from Home Depot. I apologize, because I do not recall their names. My step-mother just told me that Hibiscus is only an annual. I may be crazy, but I am 100 % positive I bought them as a perennial. I never even buy annuals and only look for plants in the perennial section. Now I am wondering if these are perennial Hibiscus. I guess my question is wondering if there are perennial hibiscus for zone 5. It sure seems like someone could have produced a perennial hybrid... maybe it self seeds... I just don't know. Thank you in advance for your help. Megan

Hi Megan and Welcome! If your hibiscus has dull medium green heart shaped leaves, dinner plate sized white, pink or red flowers with HUGE, bomb shaped buds (2-4" in length!), it is a perennial, hardy hibiscus. Hardy hibiscus need very little care over the winter, they are root hardy to about zone 5 with no protection. They die to the ground each year. If your hibiscus has glossy deep green leaves, 3-6" flowers of red, pink, orange, yellow, double or single flowers, it is probably a TROPICAL hibiscus.

Megan, Sorry I'm a bit late but I just got here. Here is a pic of a 'Disco Bell' hardy hibiscus from seed I collected from a HD plant 3 or 4 years ago.
Disco Bell is popular around here, they grow about 30 inches tall and come in white, pink red and rose. I cover mine with a few inches of fallen leaves in the fall. They flower the first year from seed, too. Great plants.
