Does anyone have experience with this one? A fellow gardener gave me 4 seeds, 3 came up, I gave her 1, another friend 1 and kept this one. I don't think they are hardy, wish it was. I think the flower is dark red.
Here it is today at about 10 weeks old. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks Sunny. I did some additional searching and found out that is originally from South Africa. Usually grown as an annual from seed or cutting. Has dark red with purple center flowers. Does not over-winter well in the house, they are awfully big at 4 - 6 feet. I sure hope to get seeds, it looks very nice so far, imagine it 5 feet tall..... I planted it in my 'nursery' because I didn't know any thing about it. Now I wish I had put it in a more visible spot, LOL. If I get seeds, I'll be glad to share some with you. I'll post pics of the flowers if I get any.

Andy, do you have any perennial (hardy) hibiscus? I've probably got about 10 or so of them...white, pink, red, & pink and white swirl...love them all. :)

Sunny, Yes. I've had the Disco Bell for many years.
I did a seed swap this Spring. I was interested in taller ones, Red Shield was included with Star of Texas and another one labeled Burgundy. I had no trouble finding out about the Star of Texas. The burgundy is really un-named, I think, but the tallest of the three so far. It will be interesting to see what the nursery looks like in September.

I've seen a burgundy paired with a white one...what a stunning combination. Love your Disco Bell! :)

Hi Andy_P, I am very patiently awaiting photos of the flowers on the Red Shield. Hibiscus have always been one of my favorite flowers. The "Disco Belle" is a beauty without a doubt. Beverly SW Missouri-USA

Andy, I received a red shield cutting in 2004 fall and it rooted...then planted out in spring 2005. It grew over 10 ft tall, way over the fence, with many, many buds; but then came Rita...fence fell. I waited patiently but no sign of life so I cut here down. I can't wait to see yours bloom. Betsy

I can't wait either. Still no buds, but the plant is over 3 feet tall and bushy, now. I also have a mystery one that was simply marked Burgundy, it's about 30 inches tall and has buds. We'll see, I got 3 kinds of seed with the Red Shield, the 3rd is Star of Texas, a tall red one. No buds on that one either.

Look at the base of the dead flowers. There should be a thumbnail size seed pod there. When it turns brown and cracks open, the seeds are ripe. Collect and store in a paper envelope until ready to start indoors, 6 weeks before last frost next Spring. The actual seed is brown and a bit smaller than the head of a match. I picked mine today. My Red Shield has not flowered yet although it is 6 feet tall.

I grew red shield. It was truely awesome, though I seen no blooms.I did have buds formed though& it was so -close.I could see the red peeking from buds on 3.It was a good 10-12 ft tall& was tied to the fence cause a hurricane passed through(Rita)I didn't get any seed& the 3 seeds I traded for did not grow.after rita the plant was blown in one direction.it was stright for 4 ft(tied/anchored)then went north.I decided if grown again would grow in large container so could get blooms.someone said it blooms in FL in dec at christmas time.shes always decorated hers& that it was an annual killed by frost. Andy.I wish you luck.I hope you cover that baby with a sheet or comforter if bad weather comes your way& I hope you own a 10 ft ladder.I've covered a blooming brug durring frost so could see the blooms a bit longer.I left one trunk that was loaded& got through it all 5 nites.and water well the night before a freeze forcast
