I planted a Rose of Sharon Hedge 4 years ago. They have filled out beautifully and are now 6 to 8 feet tall. For the last two years however, the two on the south end of the hedge have developed buds that never open. The buds get so heavy the branches can't support the weight. I have never pruned them as I want them to reach a height that provides privacy. They receive sun nearly all day. I use wild and june bearing strawberries as a ground cover. A small patch of Rhubarb grows about 4 feet from that end of the hedge row, the only other type of plant near them. I use preen in the spring and fall and fertilize with time released granules. I bring in compost and garden soil mixed with some sand and peat moss and work that in around my plant beds in the spring to supplement our clay soil. I'm at a loss as to the cause or solution to this problem. The rest of the hedge blooms beautifully. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Is this end near the street? I have a friend and this is what happens if it gets to hot on the street side. I think she has to trim this end up, but I can check with her.

Hi Betsey, Is it getting a different amount of water than the others? I live in Florida and have several Hibiscus. Seems like during drought type conditions mine will set buds, but not open. The Rose of Sharon I have was transplanted this summer and I had to prune it quite severly as it was damaged during a demolition job. She never stopped blooming even though she dropped all the leaves. Being newly transplanted I watered the daylights out of it for the first month. My other Hibiscus do similar when we are really dry. If I water, they will shower me with open flowers. If I wait for rain, they set buds and some drop. Could be a water issue.

I was wondering if you are sure they are buds and not seed heads. My Mother did not see the blooms facing the street. She is a senior and does not go out a lot. The ones facing the street bloomed early this year in June. When the bushes started blooming facing inside the yard (Aug) she wondered why the blooms on the street side did not open. They were not blooms but the seeds which will be heavy because they are large heavy balls with seeds in them.
