While out of town, I recently purchased a "Haight Ashbury" hibiscus. I thought it so odd as well as pretty as I hadn't seen these hibiscus in my immediate area. Did a little research and it's one of the new ones out. It's not bloomed of yet. Was wondering if any garden buddies have one or maybe two in their gardens and may want to share info about the plant as well? What's interesting about this plant is the leaf color along with the vast variation of color, i.e. from creams to pinks to burgundy. The plant is noted more for its foliage than the flower. Take a look!

Thanks Growit, all the way from the U.K. No rain this way, not for at least two weeks. I am constantly watering my plants. Very hard to keep up with them but well worth it!:) Yasmeen, thanks! Not sure why I've gotten the two responses in a personal email rather than posting here. Can anyone answer that? Are there others who would like to comment on this plant, please do so here. Anyone out there has a Haight Ashbury? Would like to know more about the blooms! Stephanie

Found the following online, Stephanie: I think I may have found what I was looking for: Hibiscus acetosella 'Haight Ashbury.' This plant has amazing foliage--maple-like leaves splotched with dark green, bright red, and deep burgundy. And then there are the flowers--single-petal blooms of deep, I mean really deep, burgundy that darkens to very nearly black in the throat.

Thank you Donna. That's just what I was looking for. I've heard the flower is no big deal, but wow, I sure think it is according to the pic you provided! I will save the pic and look forward to my H. Ashbury blooming. Guess I'll have to wait until next year for that. I'll probably have to overwinter. Will do more research on all of that. Thanks also for info on "replies to my posts"!

According to Norman Winter, it should be hardy in your area. Your photo showing the variegation is super. http://msucares.com/news/print/sgnews/sg07/sg070222.html

Hi Patches! Thanks. Would you believe just yesterday I re-staked H. A Hib. It has already grown at least 12 inches more. Stephanie

Oh my gosh, how tall is it supposed to get? I don't know anything about them, but it sounds like it's gonna be quite a big plant.

Found this site by doing a search for Hibiscus 'Haight Ashbury.' My wife bought two plants last Saturday while we were in Ashland, Oregon. Has anyone tried to propagate the plant?

Patches, on one of the H. A. sites, it states 3 to 4 feet. Mine is taller than 4 ft for sure. I'm hoping I see a bloom or 2 this season as bloom time is late summer, early fall. There is still hope! And I do hope I can keep this plant around as cold hardiness is 28 degrees. I'll keep you posted! Garden_writer, Hello! Glad to see we picked up another GB as a result of my Haight Ashbury thread!! I also have this plant.I just got it this summer.is over 9 feet tall and it was very wide but I trimed the sides up and trimed all of the lower brances off so now it looks more like a tree.It roots like crazy from cuttings.I am leaving the moter plant outdoors this winter and I'll keep some rooted cutting inside and see what happens.

Hi Linda, oh goodie, now we can compare notes! :) I think I am going to trim it tomorrow as so unbelievably high. I'm just hoping by cutting or trimming back I do not disturb or disrupt blooms for the spring. Anyone with suggestions? Would it be okay to trim back now? Stephanie
