Started flowering this week and has now got up to 12 feet high. Only single flowers, but large with such delicate colours. When the seed is ready, I'll be happy to share.

I love these things, Terry. Now is this Rose of Sharon or the big perennial hibiscus? It looks like the big hibiscus to me. I have both but sometimes size perspective in a pic is hard to tell.

Tanya, I think Rose of Sharon is Hibiscus syriacus & is rated zone 5 (fairly hardy). This is rated zone 10, so it gets special warm treatment in winter. Its only downside is it is covered in small spines so has to be handled with care. I have another close relative (H. calyphyllus) which has almost identical flowers - about 3" across (but happily no spikes).

Oh, yes, I knew the buds looked different.. as you said, the spines. We have hardy hibiscus here with enormous blooms..dinner plate size and I have one called Ol' Yeller that is really more of a creamy white with red center like yours. My regular rose of sharon that's white with red center is 'Red Heart' I think. Those are winding down now and I think the last of the giant ones has fallen now. They are all such late summer showstoppers, though, don't you think?

I agree. Pity the flowers last only a day or two
