Hy there Lisa,
I have few hibiscus too.I like this plant very much 'cause is not too demanding.
Hibiscus need to be pruned if the branches are growing too much or chaotic. A prune job need also to be done in order to help for a beautiful blooming. I prune mines on a differential schedule, depending on their age and look.
To the old one, I cut back the long branches at half of their lengths. This I do every late autumn and also in spring. For the rest of my hibiscus (wich are young and small/short = one or two years and up to 40 cm high) I only apply one prunning in spring. They always bloom spectacular. See for yourself:

Transplantation need to be done when the pot became too small for the roots and the plant doesn't bloom anymore.
Some more info - hibiscus care:
-hibiscus likes sun exposure,
-water regularly and also spray water on their foliage,
-provide a sunny location, safe from cold windy air,
-fertilize once a week durring the spring and autumn.
