Second picture...tree/shrub planted in bucket? Why?

It is not a bucket, but just a piece of black 4" high landscape plastic. I had it around the tree when I first planted it, before there was any sort of landscape bed there. I had it there to hold in the mulch because the ground slopes back towards the fence....LOL, I've just never taken it out--but I don't know why! I guess now I will pull it out in the fall or spring :)
