I'm so very sad this year about losing the flowers in my garden this year. What a lovely place you have created. That same cold front will be here tomorrow night, without the snow, however.

Oh Birdgarden, I feel so sorry for you. You obviously love your garden and work hard in it, but to have that snow and things all going dead or dormant, eek. Move to Australia is my best advice, then you can enjoy flowers all year round! If I couldn't pick a good vase of flowers every week of the year, I would be devastated. My son's comment 'Who threw the white blanket and killed everything?' No way is my garden ever as beautiful as yours at its best, but no way is it ever as bad as yours at its worst. Im happy with mediocre all year round.

It does look rather sad at the moment..especially given how fabulous it looks when there isn't snow on the ground. Isn't it amazing though how the color returns every year (at the least the perennial color). This past winter was the first real northern winter (and it doesn't get that cold here) I have ever spent with a garden, and I was so sure it would never ever look as good as it had the summer before..but sure enough..it came back strong and then some. Looking forward to seeing your garden come alive again next year.

I'm sorry . . what is sad about dormancy? We all need a rest, including plants. I, for one, enjoy the winter and especially marvel at the miracle that is spring when plants emerge from the frozen ground. Margaret, please do not feel sorry . . . the plants are not dead - they are asleep. The garden, under snow, is certainly not "worst". I leave my plants to provide structure in the snow and it is also beautiful. For example, see my daffodils piercing through the frozen ground this past spring. Amazing, eh?

It is definitely exciting to see it come back, but I do think its sad to see it go. Just like saying goodbye to a very good friend you know you will not see again for several months. There will eventually be a happy meeting again, but the months between can sometimes be bleak. Maybe it gets easier when you do it for a few years. I am still getting use to the concept myself

Have been so inspired by your beautiful gardens,Marsha and yes it is sad when winter puts it to sleep. I agree with Suzy, that the waiting period to be back in the garden again sometimes seems endless.

I don't mind the winter wait at all - gives the gardener time to "refresh" and plan for next season's garden. I spend hours each day working in mine and by October I am getting tired of it-though I admit I am ready & waiting by March and May doesn't come fast enough. Greg is right - there is such joy in going out and discovering the first bulbs poking through the cold ground! My winter garden is still a joy to behold as I turn it over to the birds. I have 16 bird feeders and a heated water supply and the backyard birds are just as enjoyable as any bloom. They even have their own Christmas trees decorated with pinecones filled with peanut butter/seed, coneflower seedheads, suet balls and garlands of love lies bleeding amaranth. As it says in Ecclesiastes: "there is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven" and "he has made everything beautiful in its time".

I'm sure I would appreciate it more if I lived there, but I love being able to do something all year round, I'd have to do housework or something if it wasn't gardening weather!(DH might interject that this would be a good thing) My son's Nan lived in Pennsylvania for a while, and although she wasn't a fan of snow, she said it was incredible to see the rate of change in seasons. Here they are not very marked, we have daffodils coming up before all the autumn leaves have fallen. And summer is just like a dormant season, especially for me in my ornamental garden which gets no water. Things just shut down in the heat. the veggie patch grows and flourishes, tho, and its amazing how fast cuttings take in summer, if they don't dry out.

I love my seasons.. Right now.. every day is a canvas of beauty.. My mind wanders ..and reflects in awe at it all.. I wonder if I would feel that way if it was a world of green all the time? I have so much routine in my life..This is one of it's spices. Your photos are just beautiful!! You have such pretty ..loved gardens..Truly inspirational..

Well said, Monique and I agree. Just today I used the following quote on my photo blog. . . I'm glad I live Where seasons change - I like my world To rearrange. (author unknown) Thank you everyone for the nice compliments on my gardens. I do work hard to keep them beautiful from May-October so I truly do enjoy the winter downtime to pursue other hobbies without having to worry about watering & weeding. I started the cleanup today but it usually takes me about a week to get both gardens done. Then it will be about time to net the goldfish and put them in a tank for their winter hibernation.

I work hard too and May-October is the only time I can dig up weeds. In the hot season the ground is just too dry. Your garden is utterly amazing at its best, and even in winter the snow looks pretty. But I wouldnt want it for myself. How could I sit on my hands and do nothing for months at a time? Doesn't bear thinking about. Poor goldfish. No, I could not bear months of non gardening weather, even a day or two makes me uneasy. So I won't be moving to Minnesota anytime soon.

I just came in from several hours worth of cleanup in my gardens for the second day in a row and I have only "just begun". Working in the cool sunshine (snow's gone for now) gives me a lot of time to "think" because I have been feeling bad about comments posted in this thread. I posted in this thread because I thought it would be fun to share my garden's look throughout one complete year - I was careful to try and shoot the same angles to give you the right perspective. I didn't mean to spark a debate on when my garden looks the best or worst, who works the hardest, whether my fish are harmed by taking them in for the winter or give you the impression that I just "sit on my hands for months at a time" just because the garden is dormant. My garden gives me great joy but it is not my "life", there are others things more important to me and I could give it up in a heartbeat for any one of them. I'll definitely be skipping this thread in 2007.

Awwww don't feel bad Marsha! I think we all just handle change differently I love your gardens and your fabulous threads..winter, spring, summer or fall. I know you will be having fun in that neat little log cabin of yours. Maybe you will show us some of your craftiness in the winter?

Sorry If I offended, Birdgarden. I love your garden, and I think you do great work. I especially like they way you have used structures and features to give the garden more form during winter. Its just that the seasonal change is sooooo different from the way the world works here. Just an observation, certainly not a criticism of you, your garden or your weather. Its kinda hard to make any kind of comment without making some sort of comparisons, especially on comparison photos! Everything I said was in kindness, sorry if it didn't come across like that. The net is notorious for misunderstandings. We had unseasonally hot weather too last week, Scotkat - only our temp was 35 C.

I love this beautiful garden. Marsha..how does your garden grow right now? Is it coming alive or is there still a bit of time to wait? I bet you did something fun and creative in that little cabin this winter. I'd love a show and tell.
