This past weekend I finally dug out a bed for a cutting garden. (I've been wanting to do this for a couple of years). It's not too big, but it sure seemed big when I was digging all of the sod out...lol Before:
After (A):
After (B):
I transferred a rose bush & that is what is in front of the trellis. I planted 8 tulip bulbs (early spring bloom)on each end, as well as a shasta daisy clump on each end. I planted purple coneflower & sage to the left of the rose, and bee balm to the right. (The rocks and bricks you see are temporary...holding down chicken wire I put over the tulip bulbs). The icicle pansies are just filling in for this fall & early spring until it is time to plant my other seeds (zinnias and ???). I also plan to transfer some black-eyed susans and salvia to this bed next spring. I might move some coreopsis grandiflora to this bed too, as I have plenty of it in other areas that need divided. Hopefully I'll have a good assortment to convince the butterflies & hummingbirds to come along & enjoy themselves. PS: DJ, thanks for the motivation to get me to finally do this project (referring to our conversation in the Beds & Borders forum...Speaking of motivation...do you have that house painted yet?! lol)

I like the shape of your new garden, Lisa. Be careful with the black-eyed Susans.. they are very pretty but like to 'take over' a spot.. their seeds pop up and germinate all over. What rose do you have?

I am glad you like the shape of the bed. That was one of the reasons it has taken me so long to do this project. I couldn't decide on the size, shape or exact location. I don't know what happened but I woke up Saturday morning & just "went with it" on the whole project (shape, size, location, plant selection) and never looked back. This was the shape I had in mind but wasn't real sure about it.
Thanks for the heads up. I just got some divisions a couple of years ago, but they have not spread yet (as far as I can tell!)
Funny you should ask. I have been wondering the same thing. It was the first plant I ever bought for my landscaping. This was back when I knew NOTHING about plants/landscaping, etc. I can't believe it never died on me since I was so new at this. I'm not sure how to take care of it, but I guess I'm doing something right since it is still alive! I was going to put a post on this site, asking if anyone knew what kind it was. Here are pics of it:
I thought I had a close up picture of it, but I cannot find it. Since I just cut it back to move it to this bed, I can't take any pics until it blooms again (unless I can find some left in the garbage can...gosh that sounds awful!)

I remember digging a bed very similar in size to yours. Instead of one day, it took three days to dig! Anyway, it is doing fine these days. I bet you enlarge yours over time!

As a matter of fact, I was thinking about making it larger already! So many plants to choose from & so little space...I'd love to have a nice little farm like yours. I can only hope my plants will look half as good as your plants; I enjoy the pictures you post of your farm~it is such a pretty place :)

That happens to me all the time,Lisa. I start out with a small area and it just keeps growing and growing and growing! Your new bed is just lovely and what a stunning pink rose.

Isn't that funny? You'd think by now we'd know to make the areas plenty big the first time ;-) I've already got a list of other plants I'd love to add to this bed in spring--hence already wishing I'd made it bigger, lol
Thanks Tammy I can't wait until next year when (hopefully) it will be filled with some height & color (not to mention some butterflies & hummingbirds!)

Tanya, I found those close up pics of my rose:
Do you happen to know what kind it is? If not, I may repost on the plant identify page

Makes my back hurt just thinking about it! I love the shape of the bed, and you have some really nice focal points that will look good even as you clip your flowers! Can't wait to see it next season!
