I thought it would be fun to compare the garden from last year to this year. I've worked hard, and have a long way to go, but I have been happy with the progress I've made this year. In 2006 I had Money Penny plants growing everywhere. I had hoped they were going to bloom, but were not going to flower until 2007. They took up so much room and were a nice cover while I was trying to add bits here and there. The clematis on the right bloomed beautifully in 2006 and hardly at all in 2007. This would be repeated with several other plants. What a year 2007 would have been if everything had bloomed! Here are pictures of May, 2006 and 2007:
Next up is June 2006 and 2007. The yellow daylily in the left garden didn't bloom at all in 2007 - no one single bloom. I thought that was so strange.
July 2006/2007
I've added a few plants that will show up better next year (white coneflower and veronica, and a late blooming astilbe). In the back, left I added a Russian Sage, but it didn't do well at all. I am going to move it more to the front where it will receive more sun.
I don't have a picture for the August 2006 garden because it was completely gone. But here is the 2007 August garden. We had really hot temps in August and some of the annuals suffered, but the caladium and petunias lasted until September. Well, that's the garden over two seasons. I can't wait to get to the plans for this year.

It looks like they cleared a bit of land beyond your woods. I like the additional color you added to your garden and the red earth and rocks really punch it out.

Amazing how much things Change and Stay the same from year to year. The bones are there but the dressing is different. You have really done a lot in your garden in a year and added so many plants. Your August picture says it all..so beautiful and yet last August you didn't have anything to photograph. Love your grass "fountain". Everything is so pretty Leslie.

Great pictures! I think before and after pictures are very interesting, especially when taken one year apart like yours. They sure did remove a lot of trees behind you... I bet that was a hard shock to recover from.

They came and in three days removed every tree.
I was seriously depressed for days, even weeks. To live for 20+ years with deep and dark woods then to have them removed so unceremoniously...it was awful. But on a positive note, there were no deer after they were through. About a week before, the deer had eaten every one of my Stella d'orr buds and would have next gone after my Phlox. They also ate a large grouping of hosta in my shade garden. Thanks Susy! I know I need to plant more perennials behind the annuals that front the garden. What fun to be planning and choosing. It's why I love GB''s so much - there are so many beautiful gardens to get ideas from.

So that is why the hosta is gone! It's good you got some benefit out of it as I would also be depressed about that change.

Actually, i think what you are seeing are the money penny plants. Now that I look at them, they do look like hosta! The hosta are in a different shade garden. I haven't worked on it in years so I never photograph it. It's like a big smorgsboard for the deer!

Leslie your gardens are so pretty! I like the backdrop of the trees especially. It's sad they took a lot of trees out. Are the trees we can still see on your property?
Mine didn't either. I thought it was strange also.

Yes, they are on my property. When the back was full of the deep woods it looked so pretty, but now that it's all gone I really notice all the awful looking undergrowth! I guess I need to get in there and weed-wack some but I can hardly take care of what I do have! Thanks so much for your kind comments. Funny about the yellow daylilies not blooming. I sure hope they come back next year.
