Hey there everyone. I picked up a 'nikko blue' hydrangea yesterday, and it was poorly tagged. I live right on the border or zone 4/5. Anyone able to grow this hydrangea in this area? Anyone in zone 4 successful with it? I have found mixed info on the web regarding its hardiness, so any info you have would be great.

Thanks,
Jamie

Gosh, I found the same conflicting info you did. What the heck, give it a try. Do you have a large enough area that could be considered a somewhat protected area? I think they take part shade, right? I hope it works out for you.

I live in Z5, and I always covered mine with leaves after raking. That's about all they need to protect the roots.
But, I have customers who don't cover theirs, and they come back every year.
I'd rather be safe and take the 10 minutes to do it.

Thanks for the advice. I usually cover everything with the leaves, but I'll be sure to add some extra added protection. I plan on putting it in a place that is blocked from heavy winds, so I'm crossing my fingers. Thanks very much!

If you protect it over winter there's a better chance that it will develop flowers next season. Otherwise, even if it comes back you will only get foliage.

Yes, that seems to be the case with another hydrangea I have. Even with protection, they die back all the way, and give me a nice bush of green leaves all year. Boring! I'll try and protect them as I do my roses this fall, and hope for the best. Thanks for the advice!
