I wasn't quite sure where to post this (I never realized we don't have any kind of fruit/vegetable thread--or do we somewhere & I am missing it?)

Does anyone have experience in growing strawberries? A friend of mine was wondering how difficult it is/would be. His wife did some research on the internet & read about having to use a bird net to keep the birds & critters out of them, but is that the biggest thing? Are they easy to grow? Are some var. easier to grow than others? He is retired & I think is just looking for something else to grow in addition to his "normal" crop selection-- but doesn't want to grow them if they are a big hassle. Comments, suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I have my strawberries growing under a net. They don't seem like much of a pain, but I've only had them for a year. I've read that the plants should be replaced every two years.

I think growing strawberries is one of the easiest things anyone can do. They do require constant weeding, though. After you set them out mulch like crazy. I use about a 2" layer of straw. They produce so many runners that you'll never have to buy starter plants again. Just clear away a spot for them to root. You can pin them down if you want (I don't), but they'll take root regardless. After two years the "mother" plants don't produce well, so I yank them. Every four or five years, I set out a new patch from the "babies" in the current one. Then I work the old patch up and plant something different - usually peas or beans, because they set nitrogen in the soil. I've heard others recommend putting then into flower beds, but I don't agree. They're too invasive for that and the runners make cleaning the flower bed almost impossible. Have fun with them. They are such a treat here in central Ontario - generally my first harvest after rhubarb and asparagus.

This is the source I used when I wanted to figure out which strawberry cultivar I would like best. Their link to Darrow's book was very helpful.

I chose Ozark Beauty, an everbearing strawberry.
