Quite cold and overcast today but I took Evee for her walk anyway - I also cut some geranium slips and will try to root them in shot glasses - I have tried this before but hopefully I will have better luck this time...
The yard is crazy with birds, I don't even know what some of them are and they are fun to watch.

Where did the day go?

There was heavy frost on the grass and windshield this morning... that wasn't supposed to happen, so I brought the tomatoes in today and hope some of them will ripen indoors.

Seems there are even more birds in the yard today, what is the attraction? Maybe it is the fact that Evee is out there to scare away predator birds.

Flowers still look good out there, the frost hasn't done them in yet.

The tomatoes that I left outside look better than the ones I brought in. Unusually warm here for so late into October and I am not complaining. Very pleasant out in the yard yesterday. I dug the begonias up and will see how they store in the garage. The flowers in the garden are still blooming fine, it is amazing. The phlox still have some blooms that smell like summer. There are some birds in the birdhouse. I cut the straggler pumpkin and brought it in, it will be interesting to see if it is hollow inside or not. Lots going on! The sun is coming up and the sky is beautiful this morning.

break time, what a day... Hannah is home from school sick ~ had to run errands a day early and fetch her homework and more.. helped put up soffit board this weekend but there is still the front of the house to do -- the cold may keep it from getting done, it's a project. Rob pinned up the remaining berry vines and they look good. Pumpkins are carved and out - good grief, I don't know if I'll be done working before the little knocks are heard on the door. Mild temps are keeping things in bloom still -- amazing for this time of year!

Lots of kids came around for Halloween but the holiday lacked a little spark being that Hannah was not feeling well and is getting to old for the fun. Oh well, the Halloween stuff is packed and put away and my thoughts are moving ahead to Christmas already, this year I want to be more prepared instead of scrambling last minute.

It is a grey and rainy day, somehow the yard still looks good and temps are predicted to stay mild which is good and easy on the heating bill. I can't believe I was out in sandals in November.

Not complaining!

time is going too fast, already well into November but the weather has been unbelievable there are still flowers to be found everywhere and I am still running around in sandals. I did get some things cleared out of the garden yesterday and hope to do some more today~ up and at em!

apparently I didn't get moving fast enough, the party is over, rain and cold are here :(

Today I will plant the one geranium slip that grew roots. A souvenir of summer...

the geranium is still alive..so far. Christmas lights went up outside yesterday while it was warm, enjoyed a fire on the patio -- and this morning I woke to find the snow we had is all gone!

Back at - it - hope to get some decorations up inside today and some cooking done.

break time -- what warm weather today! there have been so many birds in the yard lately - fun to see such variety - cardinals, finches, some I-don't-know-what-they-are's and a blue jay ~ the rabbit was sighted too and he is huge! Sun is trying hard to stay out today and I am not feeling well enough to get out with Evee :(

it's been that long? wow-- about a foot of clean looking snow in the yard~ Thankfully we have a snowblower this year so making those trails for Evee is easy. The wreaths are up and the birds are still coming around~ I miss the garden but the winter seems to be going fast so far so hopefully it will be over before I know it.

it's been that long again?? Holidays are over -- the outside lights have been taken down, there is a leaning snowman in the front yard with his nose half eaten and his smile and eyes missing altogether and a light-up deer that was a gift from my husband heading into storage -- it will be a great addition to the yard next year.

A naughty squirrel has destroyed the mesh bag that I was using to feed the small birds.. I am putting feed loose around the yard until I can get a replacement.

Some days have felt like spring to me and it is not so terribly long now until the winter is over.

New kindling is put by for those spring clean-up fires :)

Black crows trying to chase away a huge hawk today. I am afraid to put out seed, would it lure in snacks for this hawk?

Snow is melting fast today, chilly in the house.

Pink hyacinth is so fragrant inside.

My own window peeper!

Snow is back, and lots of little footprints out in the garden. Hurry up Spring! My hands are itching to plant things and this year I will only buy common zinnias, peas, pumpkin, blue morning glories and sunflowers. I did not have much luck with the fancy varieties I bought last year...

More sensible purchases this year;

Fun 'n Sun Hybrid Sunflower Mix

Star of Yelta Morning Glory -- dark purple

Cut and Come Again Mixed Zinnias

Triple Treat Pumpkins

Sugar Snap Peas

Snowing big flakes this afternoon, DD is home sick -- need to get my work done so I can get over to the track.

Time has been going so fast but I hope it slows down this week, the temps will be some warmer and I hope to do straightening in the garden, too early to do any clearing. Enjoyed a fire on the patio last night and again this morning. Evee has made a friend with a dog on the other side of the fence in the back corner. Also bought a vine at a sale this weekend and I have plans to try to make it into a tall pyramid of sorts so will need to scrounge or shop for a large pot this week. I hope they trade out the hyacinths at the track soon and I wonder what they will put in the parking lot planters this year.

Still working on cleaning up the yard, but can only work with what has thawed. Keeping the birds fed. Had a good fire on the patio that kept going all day ~ there was a blue sky for Birthday Girl :) Tulips are coming up all over and some daffodils too but I have not had good luck with those blooming. They did trade out the hyacinths at the track for pink ones, very nice to see on a gloomy rainy-snowy day. I made the pyramid plant -- looks good but did not end up being as tall as I was envisioning it.

crocus are showing themselves. Relaxing visit out to the country, nice day with family and Mom sent me home with Calla Lilies for Hannah's garden, I hope they work and will plant a few in sunnier spots as well. I hope we do not get the snow that is predicted - have had enough of that stuff already.

Hannah helped me take the red bows off of the flowering crabtree in front and replace them with colored Easter eggs - we put eggs on the bushes as well to cheer up this drab time of year. We also put a wind chime in the work room window well - hopefully it will keep the moles and chipmunks away from that area so they won't fall in there so much.

Had thunder in the night and it's been mostly overcast - cleaned up the yard a little more and had a fire.

What happened! tons of snow buried the eggs and who knows how the tulips and crocus are faring under all that cold -- it is melting fast -- pretty to look at but not fun to drive in.... birds are flittering around the yard anyway. 4th round of hyacinths are wilting at the track -- I took some yellow freesia to the post office and kept some for myself too, they didn't last long enough!

surprised with garnet colored tulips mixed in with white hyacinths at the track -- an unexpected day brightener -- the back yard is depressing with all that snow. Birds are still around more so that is nice.

Mom says tulips should be OK under snow.

Snow is receding, tulips etc.. look OK and it sounds like spring with birdsong

Still waiting for the snow to recede completely - the cardinal is back this year, how nice, I don't know where they nest but they are in the yard every day.

New pale yellow hyacinths at the track and the flowers I bought at the store are still going strong.

The garden is ready for winter, glass things are put away and I trimmed out the back area by the fence.

I added a few pink asian lilies and 3 new toad-lilies to Hannah's Garden. I didn't realize the lilies were such different heights until after they were planted. Oh well, another incident of accidental gardening, it will be interesting to see how it looks next year.

I have been adding new strings of Halloween lights to the crabapple tree in the back~ fun to look at from the kitchen window.

I took cuttings again this year- one has roots already.

The flowers at the track have been pulled out and pots put away~ this summer the gardens there were so pretty.

It will be interesting to see what they do for Christmas in the indoor park.

New additions to garden: Russian sage and Don Juan climbing rose.

I had also planted some tulips but the squirrels ate most of them...

Looks like it was much warmer this same time last year -- I have a mini rose that needs to be planted outdoors, hoping for another warm day?
Mary Posted on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 11:09 pm:   Last Buddysize PhotosCopy highlighted text to new message Edit Post Delete Post Print Post

I put in the mini-rose, hope it survives winter. Today I watched the birds make themselves at home in the back yard. The pair of cardinals seem to love the gazebo and smaller birds are eating from the dried flower heads that are left. The crows are back and the sparrows.

I transplanted 6 various little cuttings from the garden into one pot - now a centerpiece and a bit of living green, I hope these grow for awhile.

All of the burnt-out strings of lights have been taken off of the crabapple and working white ones hung on the lowest branches.

Fed seed to the birds and critters.

added some angel ornaments to those lower branches, they catch the light and are pretty to look at from the kitchen window.

The deer has been connected to power and looks nice near the oak tree. Reminds me of Dad - Buck was his name known by the other cabbies. Evee brought it a toy and expected it to play with her...
