compared to your poison ivy pic this is nothing!

Maybe it has affected your vision. LOL!

either that or give my fish away and just fill it in

Where's a pic? Stick it in the advice column and let us all think on it.

Maybe tomorrow. I must go to bed in a minute. Just had my shower. I have been putting it off since I got home. Now my face is sooooo itchy. I just want to scratch it off....

Oh Moira, that's awful! I do hope it heals up well and quickly for you. I know the itch must be annoying but don't scratch it! That's the fastest way to get an infection. (sorry, it must be the mom side of me giving advice)

I like DJ's idea of putting it in the advice forum. Maybe we can come up with a solution to your pond dilemma.

I feel so sorry for you. I wonder how long the itching will last? I don't know about Euphorbias, but PI feels better (less itchy) if it's kept cool. I hope you are feeling better today.
Dee_b Posted on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 - 12:48 pm:   Last Buddysize PhotosPrint Post

Oh dear Moira, that sounds so bad...maybe the warm shower set it off itching.

You can buy an Aloe Vera gel from the chemist, which is really good, it's organic and quite cheap about £4.99. It's a clear gel too so it doesn't look bad when its on.

Regards your pond, couldn't you just keep it as a wildlife pond...no fish. There is so much wildlife that rely on garden ponds, it would be a shame to fill it in.

OMG! OMG! Your story was so hilarious, but I didn't dare laugh because I just KNEW it was heading somewhere bad. I expected sunburn. I had no idea about Euphorbias, and now that I do, I suspect I will never own one.

Forget the picture of the pond, I want to see a picture of Moira with 2 green flaps of aloe on her cheeks!
....I am soooooo just kidding Moira! That sounds like an absolute awful & miserable experience! ...and I thought Poison Ivy was bad. I hope you are feeling better soon & it heals quickly.

LOL! I bet she looked really fishy. LOL! Poor Moira. I hope it is getting better and not worse. PI always gets worse before it gets better. For that matter, I hope you're not left with scars. I cannot tell you how glad I am that I escaped scarring from that batch of PI that I had.

Ok mum, I won't, promise. It is a lot better today although still a bit itchy.

Thanks Dee but I have plenty that I can cut off of my plant. It does look a little attacked now I must admit but that is what I grew it for.

Yep and smell funny too. Aloe has a rather pungent smell but works for me. Joking aside it really does work.

Apart from the big blister on my left cheek and an area around my mouth (looks like a large coldsore, yuk!) the rest have nearly gone. Did you know they did tests on radiation burns and Aloe healed them faster than anything else. Plants are such clever things.

Huh, no I didn't know that. Interesting. Years ago, I received a starter aloe from my cousin (who got hers from my grandma--just kind of neat). All this talk about them just keeps reminding me that I need to repot all of mine. A couple of years ago I kept up on repotting them, but they began to multiply so rapidly it just got out of hand so I moved all of them to the basement window sills---out of sight, out of mind (except when I go down there do the laundry).

How big of a pot do you have your aloe plant in? Once I get them to anything bigger than a 6 inch pot, they just grow & flop over. I think I might be repotting them too soon & the roots aren't strong enough...??????

Glad your doing a little better today.
PS: quit scratching ;-)

I hadn't heard that, but I did put it on an electrical burn one time. That was possibly the worst thing I could have done at the time. (Probably didn't help that I had already tried to rinse my finger under running water to get the black scorch off and managed to just peel my skin backwards almost to my knuckle instead.) The aloe hurt like crazy and I've been scared to use it for any open wounds since then. Just use it for sunburn now. LOL! (I went to the hospital after the incident with the running water and aloe. The doctors bandaged me up and said I probably wouldn't be able to play piano again. They were wrong. I don't even have a scar. Hmmph! That happened probably a little over 20 years ago and my Mom just got around to asking me over Christmas time how that turned out. LOL!)

Not very big!Plant Forum As you can see it needs splitting. I do grow it in very gritty compost so it drains very fast and I barely water at this time of the year.

You know that kind of screwed up wincing look you do when you hear a really nasty description of something? Well, we have a saying for that. "Suck your t-shirt up your bum moment" Thats what I just did after reading that!

You play piano?

Not well. Just enough to keep myself entertained. Of course it doesn't make any difference since it has been in storage for the last 7 years or so. *sigh* I'd like to get it out so my son could learn to play, but I'm not sure we could get it through the front door.

Gosh! Been a while since I posted. Hardly a daily log then.
So Wednesday last week finished off the rose border on one side and now I know the name of the rose (thanks to my GB peeps) I can match the other side. Seems quite apt that I posted a rose to be identified on an American forum and the rose turned out to be Rosa Queen Elizabeth, a rose bred in the US for our queens ascension...neat:) C has sent off for the roses so I can plant them next week. I got the best bargain last week. 200 crocus "snow bunting" not looking at their best anymore. Asked if they would sell me the lot at a discounted price and they did less than half price! So here is the rose bed before, during and after.
NB: Have taken the hyacinths out along the bottom persuaded C they would look better somewhere else.

Funny. Doesn't look like 200 crocus does it? I sure hope they spread out over the top for next year.
I love taking pictures with my camera to see how things have changed. That first picture was obviously taken in the summer and since then the flint edging has been straightened and replaced with larger pieces. (Yes! They come out of the ground there!) the gravel has been raked and the path weeded and the shrubs pruned. Then I weeded, feeded, watered and mulched the bed...All done. One side anyway. Next week I have to get out a Buddleja before I can plant the new roses.
The top of the bed (last picture) had to be planted for part shade as it runs alongside the wall of the house so I have been collecting snowdrops from around the garden and planting in clumps there. Also added seven hellebores.
I moved a Philadelphus aureus out of one of the other beds and put it in there as it is the only Phili that does not like too much sun, where it was before was in full sun and last year all the leaves scorched so hopefully it will be a lot happier in its new home.
Must remember to take pictures later in the year so I can compare and see how the border has progressed and whether to add anything else.

This Monday I swapped gardens as my fave garden had a visit from the tree surgeons and I wanted to be there to stop them chopping down the wrong things and to make sure they didn't trample all the plants underneath. Fantastic to watch them going up and down on their ropes. Me and five Tarzans lol!!! Sorry the pictures are not wonderful as I couldn't get too close in case they dropped a branch on me!

Plant Forum Good riddance to a Sycamore.

Plant Forum Up a larch pruning dead branches off.

Plant ForumCan you see the second guy?

Plant Forum Here he is again. This tree is a Robinia pseudoacacia. Stunning white blossoms but far too tall and liable to break itself. He took out about a 3rd of the length on the top branches.

Plant ForumYou can just see the remnants of a 20ft high laurel hedge.

I will now be able to start work on the left hand side of the garden which you can see is in a bit of a dreadful state. The fence belongs to the neighbours and they have also planted two Lleylandii on their side (Oh joy!) I need to have a word and see if I can get them to top them and fix the fence. Then there is a 20ft lilac to sort out, a decrepit Viburnum opulus and three, as yet, unidentifiable tree saplings/lanky shrubs that I need to ID and save/chuck. I will be doing this garden til I am 90!!
