Me Planting In The North East Border Tulip Mix: White, Yellow & Pink IN LIFE: There was a lock down at the kids' school today. Some wacko was running around with a gun. The kids heard "Code Red - Lock Down" over the PA system. All doors were closed. All shades were drawn. Everyone was quiet. Police swarmed the school. The mysterious gunman disappeared and the kids were released from school. It was such a relief to see them all flowing out of the school, cell phones to ears, reporting reactions to caring folks in their lives. And finally, after an agonizing wait, along came my two; John, 17, pale and shaken, and Jen, 16, unusually serious and silent. Life continues, with a deeper compassion abounding for other people in different places with much sadder outcomes to the similar scenarios. IN THE GARDEN: Comfort came from the garden, as usual. - Dug the north beds in the back yard. - Rearranged perennials: oriental poppies, peonies and Siberian irises all found their new homes. - Around the perennials went the daffodils, layered on top with dozens of Lavender Majestic crocus corms. All tucked in, neat and weed free, ready to face the winter. Very satisfying. Still to be planted: "Princess Irene" tulips and possibly a late red variety of tulips, layered with purple crocus mix, and over-planted with pansies in matching shades to the tulips Soon will come springtime with a similar scenes to these from last spring...

In The Garden: Beautiful sunny day. At last! After days and days and days of rain. Was ready to cease garden plans and commence with building ark in back yard. Redug back border middle bed. Moved two clematis and planted them deeper. They have not been performing well. "Pink Champagne" and "Dorota" have new homes. There! Let's see how they like THAT (the fussy little buggers!)
Pink Champagne Clematis
Dorota Clematis Learned new trick from Christopher Lloyd book: Interplant tulips with lupins. Tulips bloom first, followed by lupins. When both are finished blooming, dig them all up. Toss lupins into compost and immediately replant these biennials for next year. Save tulips for drying and replanting! In space vacated, plant dahlia tubers, potted lilies, or annuals for late summer/autumn blooming.
Monet Tulips
Lupins Bought bag of 100 muscari bulbs for cutting garden to underplant with Euphorbia Polychroma.
Muscari "Grape Hyacinth" In The House:
Made stir fry for dinner. Yum! In Life: Very sad news indeed. On the weekend, two friends of John (17 year old son) were killed in tragic car accident. Dave played on John's soccer team and sat beside him in} english class. Visited roadside shrine and placed african violet for the boys. RIP: David and Curtis! |
I have saved this page of your journal in my "Inspirational Garden Pix" folder to read offline. From what I've seen and read so far, your stories and writings are wonderful, your pics are terrific, and I have to say that you have way too much fun in the garden! (I must be living in the wrong zone!) I can see already that I'm going to have to try to imitate Larkwhistle. Wow, is that amazing. And you are the Queen of Bulbs! Love the flowers in your hair. |
BTW, sorry to hear about your son's friends. You sure have dealt with some very sad and scary things lately. I've heard that bad things come in threes. I hope you'll be out of the woods soon, so to speak. |

Winter Joys: My second cat, Nutty, a dear, funny little boy. He came to us as a stray, wandering lost on the highway late at night. Brought him home, searched fruitlessly for his owner, and adopted him with pleasure.
STILL out planting with snow on the ground. Have dreamed of an apple blossoms with a skirt of daffodils since reading about Monet's orchard and Tasha Tudor's crab apples with daffodils underneath. FINALLY began to make the dream a reality by planting four new "Red Sentinel" crab apples this week! YAY!!! These will be under planted with "Ice Follies" daffodils, white arabis and candytuft. The red apples are so cheerful outside the dining room window, especially contrasting with the snow and the chickadees flitting from branch to branch on the way to the feeders. The color of the apples will hang in there all winter and tide us over until the flowers blossom again in spring! |
