Well, I have finally decided to start a journal. Hopefully I will be able to look back and see what I did right, and what I did wrong. This is quite an undertaking, this old house on the water, built in the 40's. Was quite a mess when we moved in last september, but it is so fun seeing what was planted previously. So far, I planted bulbs last fall, crocus, daylilies, tulips, and all have done extremely well. I definitely need to add more this fall. Still waiting for many more. I was thrilled with the hostas that were here, they look so healthy! And the clematis, it scared me to death when I moved in, it is huge, and finally getting buds, can't wait till they open so I can see what they are. I am leaning toward Nelly Moser, but we will see. The back yard had nothing planted except for the variegated dogwood along the deck. So far, I have planted Rosa Angel Face, Martine Guillot, New Dawn, also have 3 clematis going, two I have next to the arbor leading to the pier. This week I planted 6 hydrangeas, heard they like wet feet, I sure hope so, because they are near the water along the fence. We shall see. I can't wait to get home each evening and see what waits. Probably my best surprise was the wisteria. I am pretty sure it is Amethyst Falls. It was such a tangled mess when we moved in, pulled down the gutter and growing into the corner of the siding. Pruned it awhile back and found a cheap tin trellis it had probably once grown over, but it pulled the trellis to the ground. Bought a new arbor, painted it today, and saturday will try to put it in its place and tie the wisteria to it. I need to get it growing up and away from the house, and this will make the perfect entrance to the backyard. Tomorrow is supposed to drop in the fifties with rain again, so probably no more gardening until saturday. I want to be shopping and gardening on Mother's Day, so hoping for nice weather. My son called yesterday and asked what I wanted for Mother's Day. "A wheelbarrow," I told him. He thought I was kidding. I was not...my back is killing me! A wheelbarrow and you and your brothers muscles on sunday is all I want. I have many plans for them this weekend to dig out the beds I have planned! |
