Galanthus - the first one off the mark.
The Hickelty Pickelty Garden A garden with chaotic order, a collection of random planting where only the cultural needs of the individual plants dictate their locations. Beyond that, the only rules are a matter of personal whim and and necessity. Garden structures are raised for utilitarian reasons. |
Sarcococca hookeriana This unassuming evergreen broadleaf shrub is come to the fore in the last few days, and has appropriately chosen today, Chinese New Year, to be at it's peak. There is no dramma about the bush or the flowers themselves. The flowers are, if anything, diminutive and unassuming. But they pack a mighty fragrant punch which scents the whole of the front court yet. It's cultural requirements are minimal - just give it plenty of shade (this one is in full shade, with light reflected from the garage wall across the other side of the courtyard), humus rich soil and moisture, and you can basically leave it alone. I haven't pruned or fertilised this particular specimen for 7 years. It loves it's location by the small pond and rocky waterfall.
