The 2008 dahlia season is coming upon us very soon. Time to look at your dahlia tubers from last year. I have received a few orders. I was at the Seattle Flower and Garden Show on Wed and of course I had to buy a few dahlias, along with a few Lilly's.

This will be my first time planting both dahlias and daylilies. Dahlianut....as an expert in this area, what types would you recommend to a newbie like myself? We like the colour purple and colours that come close.

If you like purple, you'll love Thomas Edison. A prolific grower and has huge blooms. It is a tall plant, however.

This message is for PlantLady2. I am new to the site so I hope I am doing this right. I am wondering what your procedure is for supporting your dahlias in the garden. I use the large stakes, but this year I would like to give them more side support. I noticed in one of your photos that it looks like a fine white wire about half way up the plant. I get so inspired when I see all your beautiful flowers. Thanks Lil/Michigan}

Mislily- we use Christmas tree twine for the side support- not wire. It's made of plastic so it doesn't stretch like baling twine does. If you look in our seedling album on page 5 you can see Walt stringing them up. There's a row of twine about every foot up the post. If one of the plants decided to start falling over Walt will tie it with a bit of twine on either side of the stalk. In the Show Gardens where the dahlias are farther apart and have their own post we use the Christmas tree twine to tie them about every 1 1/2 feet - use a figure 8 twist to tie them so there's some give & it won't saw off the stalk when the wind blows Cory- aka plantlady2

Thanks Cory, I printed a copy to give my DH the idea. Today I tried to buy the 10-20-20 fertilizer and our co-op said the closest thing they have is 6-24-24. What do you think of that mixture? They didn't have 6-10-10 either. Watch for my order. I must have Farmer John.

Susanq, you're right about Thomas Edison. Our grocery had some tubers on sale last year and I picked that one up and planted in a pot on the deck. It really did well and I'm hoping it will come back. Sharon
