The weather and forecast is such that I put the labels on my stakes today. Tomorrow I shall start opening my bins to see how my dahlias did over the winter. It is a bit early, but the forecast leads me to think I shall start planting my tubers outside. I need to get this done and clean up this mess I always make before a picnic that is here at the end of May. Let the season begin!

Eileen-- Walt started last weekend. He now has the little ones planted at our daughter's place, all the '07, '06 & most of the '05 seedlings planted. He'll start on the AA's tomorrow. Even though it's still a bit too cold to plant, with over 6500 to plant he has to get them in. After all the tubers are in then the new seedling babies - all 780 of them-- will get planted. Keeps him off the streets >:) BTW- we sent your tubers on Monday.

Well, I could no longer put planting off. I started on Monday and it is going along pretty good. The ground is still cold but not wet so hope it warms up soon.

Still doing bed prep but tubers have to go in in the next two weeks. The wind has such a bite to it, you'd think it was November here. I just keep thinking of the colors that will emerge in a few months and that keeps me moving. The weather man hinted at possible 80 degrees in the next week or so. That sounds more like it! Right now it's double layers of fleece :(

Oh, my back - nope, can't complain with my few dahlias compared to Dahlianut, Poochella, and poor Walt. But, my beds are planted! Now to slide in some leftovers, bedding dahlias, and cannas. Let the growth begin!

I realise how lucky we are here in the UK. My dahlias were planted about two weeks ago outside and are well up. I have also tried this year for the first time some "Collarette" types from seed, sown on 13th Mar 08 under cold glass some are already showing buds and were planted outside mid May. I am going to tempt fate I know.......!

Almost finished planting- only half the new seedlings left to go. Walt planted over 7,000 this year-- & this was the year he was going to cut back! Cory

Walt is a star. He has to have a system that is far more efficient than I have. It is now time to check the plants daily to see what's up.

Walt planted the last of the 780 --2008 seedling babies yesterday. He already finished the rest of the gardens so all that might have to be planted still is any replacements if something doesn't grow. Here's Walt on his knees planting the last baby- one that ended up in a 4" pot because it wasn't feeling well & had to be babied >:)
This is what part of the Big seedling garden will look like in August. Can't wait!

Walt is a two-armed planting machine! I am almost done now and glad of it. Instead of cutting back, I am nearing 400 this year. Please email me and talk me out of 500, 600, 700 and if I mention 1,000, send the men in white coats :) Cory, you use 10-20-20. Would that perchance be by Wilco Co? I picked up a bag early spring at our feed store, unlabelled as to composition but the guy checked and said "That is the 10-20-20." A couple weeks later I bought more bags, now clearly labelled 10-20-20 and the colors of the granules are completely different than the first bag. Please answer if that's your brand, and describe the colors of the granules. Otherwise, I will call Wilco and go through a color guessing game with them to figure out what the first bag contained. My hubby calls anything from off-white to brown "beige!" Hope the Wilco folks are better schooled in color ID! The stuff labelled 10-20-20 I would call white, pale overcooked pea green, and peach colored. Does that sound like the real deal?

(Walt pounding stakes in the ground) Planting nearly over, now to watch dirt for signs of new growth. Tell Walt that the Farmer and his lady are side by side and have both just peeked above ground. They are coming up!

Poochella- here's the bag of fertilizer we use. It's made by Wolfkill in Monroe, Wa. The colors are white, dark green & light green-- kind of looks like some kind of health food to me >:). Sometimes if we get it from another supplier it's more of a dark & light blue-green with white. It can vary in color but it's just the filler that carries the actual fertilizer that's colored & I guess they can use any color they want. Usually if the granuals are "beige" it's old or it's been wet at some time. Walt says that there's some state or maybe fed. law that the bags have to be labeled as to content so if you can take back the unlabeled one that's what I'd do.
Oh-- & if the men in the white coats come calling at 1,000 we would have been firmly locked up LONG ago! Eileen- it's good to hear that John & Freda are coming up together- you're going to love them! Cory

It does look like the beginnings of pea soup in that bowl! Thanks for taking the photos. I did call Wilco and the gal said the colors can range so widely from batch to batch there was no way she could tell me what the unlabelled bag contained. The way the dahlias are coming along where the unlabelled was used, I'd say it's just fine and was likely 10-20-20. And if the rain would go away for just a week, they'd come along much better!
