Last weekend we went to the Vancouver, BC Dahlia show Wyn's Farmer John did it again -- Best triple AA in show. This is Walt with it.
This one's for dahliaboy--Wyn's Conquistador won the biggest in show- it was HUGE!- so big it wouldn't fit in the back of the truck- Walt had to ride up to Van. with it in the front between his feet!
Our friends, Paul & Cheryl entered this Wyn's King Salmon & won Best AA in Show- it was absolutely gorgeous!!
A full truck of all AA's & a couple of A's.

Did you ever measure that big one? Some of that very hard work must feel worthwhile. Well done!

The big one was 14" across by 12" deep. We've grown it up to 16" across by 14" deep but that was late in the season & one of only two on the plant. It's really fun to see the look on people's faces when we take a giant like that to a show.

Those are amazing! Pretty, pretty King Salmon. They're all pretty. I bet there were a lot of gaping jaws driving behind you on that trip! Do you tie on the little orange tags to mark ownership until they're labelled at a show?

Poochella- The orange ties -- Walt puts a bamboo stick by each bloom & ties the bloom to it for transporting- otherwise they nod their heads off on the way! I make out all the tags for entering the day before so it's not left to the last minute-- which can be very nerv-wracking - esp. when you get lost in the parking lot like I did last weekend when the Van. show was in a new venue at a mall! One year on the way to Vancouver we had a van load of people follow us right to the show venue to find out where we were going with all those huge flowers! They had been behind us at the border & did a big detour from where they were going just to look at the dahlias-- more addicts in the making!

Those are great dahlias! Try coming to the Fraser Valley Dahlia Society annual show in Langley, BC too! They also have an annual sale in spring with fantastic discounts! Most tubers are no more than $3 each. You can find the Fraser Valley Dahlia Society webpage here for anyone interested: http://members.shaw.ca/fvds/

Mirek, I just now saw your question. Cory Wynne, one of our Garden Buddies does have a website: http://www.dahlias.net/htmbox/wynnes.htm I hope you see this. I'm sure Cory did not see your question.

DB- I think your Wyn's Conquistador looked just fine! Not too sure we have many secrets to find- Walt just plants them all, fertilizes w/ good old 10-20-20 farm fertilizer when he plants & again at the beginning of July to give them a boost for the shows- oh, yeah- & he's out there 24/7 weeding, tying, disbudding etc. He sprays 2 times a season w/ Orthene Flower & Garden disease & insect spray- after the bees have all gone to bed for the night. Also does a cover crop of winter rye that gets plowed under before planting. I think when you put the work in, any garden will give back it's best. From the looks of your pictures you put the work in, too! Looking forward to meeting you- we'll have to have a "Buddies Meet" here again & invite Annie, Linda & Jean as well.

I'm game for any dahlia tour, anywhere, anytime! Thanks for the explanation on the orange ties Cory. I see the bamboo "holder" sticks now. Very ingenious. And I wholeheartedly agree with 'time-in' to a garden will yield 'results out' theory.
