Friday offered patches of fog on the drive north, but by the time I hit the rolling country and fine soils of Whatcom County WA, the sun broke through, partly cloudy skies prevailed, and all was well for a tour of three separate dahlia zones. They should have signs at the county line "Warning: ENTERING DAHLIA ZONE" LOL! First was Wynne's, home of fabulous, sturdy and mostly larger dahlia originations. I will need Cory to give names to most of these because I was just agog after the first 30 minutes and didn't take notes. Starting in one seedling patch: so many colors and fabulous orange ones of promise. Cory doesn't like orange. (Please don't toss those out indiscriminately because of their color. Some of us like orange!) You can see the tip top of their fabulous gazebo which peeks through the lovely treed yard, over lush shade gardens, then dahlias, then acres of berries on to Mt Baker in the distance. Marvelous setting!
Here are many of the named varieties blooming their fool heads off despite previous rain and cooler September temps. I was already OD'd at this point and we had just begun!
Look back at Linda's close up of Wynne's glorious soil at the link, and then look below at my new dahlia bed 120 miles to the south :( LOL! Those rocks shown are in about 3 square feet of ground. Plenty more where that came from. I nearly cried when I saw their soil. http://www.gardenbuddies.com/forum/messages/41715/1272562.html
On to the flowers: I will number the photos so Cory can give us names, if they have any yet. (1)-Big, bold, bright ones held up by wonderful stems.
(2)
Beautiful yellow ones (3)
(4)-Even brighter is Wyn's Highlighter, (I think) very aptly named!
Possibly Wyn's Tuscan Sun or Autumn Reverie? I was Under the spell of Tuscan Sun or in an Autumn Reverie for a length of time looking at this one- just beautiful. (5)
(6)A pretty pastel yellow one
(7)A peach one I liked
(8)Another large zinger in kind of red-orange with yellow tips.
(9) I love the blend of colors here
(10) A rich pink on dark sturdy stems
(11) This was a very appealing color. Coral, would you say? I like it! Not orange, not pink.
ALERT THE PRESS! IS THIS A ROCK I SEE?
(12) Might be the same as #2 above? It is a bold, flashy color whether it has a name yet or not.
One I think I know- Spike. I learned it has yellow tips. Always thought it was a large pure white. It's large alright!
Tips on Spike closeup-yellow indeed.
Moving on to some pinks (13) Fiesty Frieda, I'm fairly sure, and I'm sure I want this one! Great deep pink in a BB size I think.
(14)Lighter pink, tons of perky incurved cactus blooms. I liked this one too. Better hurry up on sifting rocks out of the new bed shown above!
(14) Even lighter pink in another smaller bloom. I think it was small. Can't be sure, I was in a dahlia daze!
(15)This reminds me of one of the earlier dahlias I grew- "Ballerina," only this was about the size of 4 Ballerina blooms. Very delicate colors. Looked good enough to eat. (16)I named this "Wynne's I Want This One!" LOL. Does it have a name or is it a seedling? Please don't kill this one either, Cory! Such fabulous colors with those lines down each petal. Oohh, ahhh.
I don't know if this is the same flower as above. I love this color. The "finger-in-front" never shows the size, but it was fairly large and my nail was suprisingly clean. (17)
(18)Another great color in a large ID, a bit tattered from rain, but still stunning.
The incomparable EEEK! You'd never guess from the bud that such a wild thing would emerge!
Just a couple more and then I'll start a new thread for dialer-uppers. I can't remember if this is at Wynne's or the next stop, but I liked it: color, form and all.
This (19) was definitely at Wynne's and a lovely apricot color.
Typical stem seen just about anywhere you find a dahlia at Wynne's and we found many.
Even though it's in the orange spectrum, I liked this one too! More of a medium size, nice and full.
I hated to leave the tidy rows of nothing but dahlias, and an occasional towering sunflower LOL, but we had other sites and sights to see...
I better start a new thread for dial up users. A few more from Whatcom County to follow.

A rock? Perhaps a NW slug, hiding? Thank you for the pictures Poochella. I'm an orange person, too.

Mt. Baker ?? I loved the sight of Mt. Baker. Either you aren't disbudding or that wasn't your thumb in #17. LOL I want them all, great photos. Can't wait to discover their names. Wouldn't it be amazing if they needed someone to test their tubers in an inhospitable climate?? (say extreme MI)

Thanks for the study guide (crib sheet?). I printed it so I could go back and study the flowers. Fun.

Not a test, Cory! I just took random photos at will and not enough notes. Not any notes, as a matter of fact. How about Wyn's Inferno for name for (1)? Is there already an 'Inferno' named dahlia? I think that applies well here. The bright, fiery color caught the eye, that's for sure. Get those 03-04 seedlings out there! Wyn's Sedona Sunset is on the radar. That is one beautiful dahlia. I just found that I labelled two photos (14) Maybe this is a test, afterall! The darker pink smaller IC, vs the paler pink and cream following it (Wyn's Enchantment) were both numbered 14. Sorry! I just want you to know that what I have labelled 16-17-18 all meet with the Poochella drool of approval LOL! They all were divine. Granny, I use my thumbnails to disbud and have to hide them from public view all summer. That was my pointer, fairly clean. I am so glad I went up to visit when I did: as we've had over 5 inches of recent rain, and wind enough to take down 2 trees, 6 dahlias and break countless stems here today. ICK! The season is officially over for me.

#16 "Sugar Britches" might be a good name. It's my favorite of this bunch, altho I reserve the right to change my mind. Which is usually in an altered state anyway. "Altered State" would be a fun name too. LOL
