I thought I would give this posting its own space so it doesn't get lost. I posted it in Worth a Try! by Brian C. BTW, Brian, I bought 3 books that you mention on your website. Actually, the only books they had on clematis at Barnes and Nobles in Idaho Falls. I just couldn't find my other book I was looking for and I wanted something to read to take care of my clematis addiction while in a different city and at my in laws house. LOL Anyway, I copied your instructions on seedlings and planting seeds and listing of books. I read that while I traveled the 4 hours to I.F. and then while I was at my in laws. Then right after our second Thanksgiving dinner I told hubby I wanted to go to the Barnes and Nobles bookstore while he went elsewhere to shop. (We had a big family dinner on Saturday with hubby's large family) Anyway, I bought: An Illustrated Encyclopedia of CLEMATIS by Mary Toomey & Everett Leeds in hardcover. Published in association with the British Clematis Society. This book is big and spendy but well worth it! I have learned so much...from it. I'm learning more about all the scientific names you clem lovers throw around. I'm usually just lucky to know the trade mark names and know if it is a LFH or viticella or group 1, 2, or 3. LOL Then I got: A Comprehensive Guide to CLEMATIS by Barry Fretwell. This is a wonderful guide with super pictures! Easy to carry around an in paperback Then I bought: CLEMATIS ~For Colour and Versatility~ by Keith & Carol Fair A helpful guide on learning how and where to plant a clematis. How to pick the right trellis, wall, tree, companion, etc. Then they have a good chapter on propagation. Plus pest control and a listing of A-Z clematis with only a few photos of the flowers, but many illustrations of how to plant them and propagate them. Nice size paperback book. I've hardly gotten into this book yet! Okay, I thought I would put a plug in for these books as being very helpful and increasing clematis lovers and beginning lovers knowledge 100%.

Timo Löfgren has mentioned the book on his home page. What I can see is the book 'Photographs of Clematis Flowers' not available here in Sweden! I wonder if I should try to mail my book club to find out if they can find it. It would be a lovely Christmas gift! Do you know if the the text is in English or Japanese?

The text is mainly in Japanese. Beautiful photographs but the alphabetical index is only in Japanese. If anyone buys one and wants an alphabetical index in English, let me know and I'll e-mail it to you - it makes it much easier to navigate!!!

More details about the Japanese book: Publisher: Hekitensha. 192 pages, 470 photos. ISBN 4-88346-170-x. According to a letter from one of the authors, Mr. Aihara, this book is available through the Japanese books shops. As example he listed the following book stores in USA: - Asahiya Book Store, Los Angeles Branch, tel, 213-626-5650, fax 213-626-1746, - New York Kinokuniya Book Store, tel. 212-765-7766, fax 212-541-9335, and - Kinokuniya Book Store of America Co., tel. 503-641-6240, fax 503-643-1059. When I gave my comments about the book to the publisher, I told that an English alphabetical index list would be a valuable addition. I don't know if they have done it or not. Ian, I'm interested to get a copy of your list.

Karalyn, I really love the Encyclopedia of Clematis. It's the book that really got me going in clematis. I was fortunate enough to recently be able to send for the Magnus Johnson book, "The Genus Clematis". I can hardly wait! Katie

Thank you for the information Timo. I have tried to lay my hands upon the book but the Swedish book shops on Internet the bookshop answered, they can't get me the book when I tried to order it and I got the same answer from my English book club.... Katie! I'm sure you'll love Magnus Johnson's book! You'll have so much to read and so much look at! I followed M.J. advice and tried to sow clematis this year....

Katie, I would like to get that book now also. But I'll wait after the holidays. I think my hubby is getting jealous of all the attention the clematis are getting! Haha! Roelie: The Encyclopedia of Clematis by Mary Toomey and Everett Leeds was $59.00 at Barnes & Nobles which knowing how much books cost and paying $30.00 for lesser books that are paperbacked. I really felt that $59.00 was a small price to pay. :-)

Hi Marie! Yes, I'm trying for the first time in a very modest way with six seed pots in the carport. Thank you for the offer, another year perhaps when I have quited work for a new career as a full time clematis grower.....

Thursday 4 o Clock. I phoned the RHS (the lady who takes your call is exceedingly helpful) at Wisley bookshop, where I got my own copy; they have 22 copies in stock, they will post worldwide (Sweden, ((all Europe)) and USA no problem), and will take orders on credit cards, thereby effecting the currency conversion (they only accept Sterling); they will take orders by fax. The phone number is 01483 211113. You have to specify "The Genus Clematis", otherwise they confuse it with "Clematis the Genus" (Grey-Wilson)(which to me is just as important). The ISBN is 91-631-1030-X.
