For Marie, a better picture of 'Freckles' than the one I posted elsewhere. We had our first frost last night - about -1.5 C - but this one just goes on and on despite everything. And, yes, there are still buds and flowers on climbing 'Alec's Red'...

'Freckles' is a very suitable name. How lucky you are, to have both roses and clematis still! For me it's unbelievable, it's like you live on another planet!

I like 'Freckles' but I have the plant in Winter in the greenhouse. This year I have had flowers of seedlings of the 'Freckles' and I hoped that I got a complete red one but nothing. One was almost just the same as 'Freckles'. The 'Landsdowne Gem'is red but not all the plants therefor buy a plant with flowers.

I think Freckles is the toughest. In an average year here it goes from about August through to March and then has a bit of a pause but it really is at its best between about now and February. In a way we cheat - this is a very old house, built somewhere between 1590 and 1690 before walls were hollow and insulated, so there is probably quite a lot of heat lost through the wall where it is growing, so it does get a lot of protection. This morning, for example, when we had a sharp frost, the house-ward side of my car, 6 feet from the wall, was clear but the other was completely white, like a cake iced on one side only.
Wisley Cream, growing on an outbuilding, also flowers well, but later than this, and my Lansdowne Gem (or 'Red' as it was called when we bought it) has not flowered since it was in its pot. The other 'Freckles' is at the bottom of the garden in the most exposed part but that, too, has flowers coming on it now. I think it can really tolerate quite a few degrees of frost but then some, like Roelie, can't grow it. It may well be something to do with drainage and not liking winter wet.

Last Winter I have lost my 'Freckles' outside. We had three times frost and two times there was no problem because after the frost new leaves appears.
After the last frost with cold wind the plant died. So I keep al my cirhosa's in the greenhouse and I place cuttings in the garden at a south wall.

So, good info. I guess I'll grow them right up against my house partially under the deck lattice roof. It also sounds like I'd better get some cuttings from them, too.
