This was prompted by Gardenbug, really. She asked what the picture was that I had for some time as my profile photo. She had the idea that it was a watercolour - in reality it was a clematis photo (surprise! surprise!) which had been manipulated. A heracleifolia, in fact. So, for all you clematarians who are starting to play a bit more with your photo software, here are some examples of what you can do. In this case, I cut out the flower and pasted it onto a plain background and then used Paint Shop Pro's Deformation: Twirl routine to find the desired effect. Here's the example I had on my profile before.
And now for the fun bit: can you dedicated clematarians decide what the original clematis was before it was 'twirled'? 1 2 3 4 5

Oh these remind me of fingerpainting back in nursery school! I'd never be able to identify them... Okay, I'll try #1: Aromatica (or Petit Faucon)? #2: a double? Multi-Blue? Hmmmmmmmmm on the rest. I still like the first one best!

Very clever! I must learn how to use this software. I don't have a clue about their identity.

I thought no. 4 couln't be a clematis, so I had to twirl it backwards. Yes, it is.

Hmm, I'm almost lost, but think 2 is Kiri te Kanawa, as the tips of the petals shading and looking like mine. Then 5 might be Daniel Deronda, but whatever 4 is, I want that one myself -- unless she is, forgot the name -- brain pause. So am waiting for answers.

Timo - that's CHEATING!!! Some clues No 1 Two people have got it right. No 2 It's Blue but not multi... No 3 Is a month... No 4 Is from the East No 5 Is a great diva ... and, if you have the software you can do exactly what Timo did and 'untwirl' them! I must admit, it really is NOT easy to recognise the originals. Here are two more, using the 'kaleidoscope' effect. It's amazing what you can do if you have the patience. florida sieboldiana North Star

I think the pictures are fascinating, although clematis are certainly beautiful enough on their own, with no need of "twirling". Yet, I'd be the first in line for clematis cards. Hmmm, maybe that is my next career....or yours?

4/5, Kate. The one which is fooling everyone is a koreana - probably. Let's see if I can find the original. Here you go.
It's fondly known as 406 koreana. It was bought as a seedling grown by some gardener friends who have a small nursery. I believe all the seed originally came from the Hardy Plant Society. Lovely shoulder pads, eh?

Would we have had to get the whole name, koreana 406 for a full 5 points? I'm not surprised you used to teach! I love the kaleidoscope of the florida sieboldiana, a great choice for that effect.
