Here are some pictures of the big pergola I am building across the front of my house. I still have to complete the roof which will probably have either 2" X 4" or 2" X 6" laid on their sides and put fairly close together. The roof will extend out 3 ft for a total of 6 ft out from the house to shade the 2 large windows in the summer. I just got the beds filled in this weekend. Now comes the best part, deciding what to put where! Yes I already have one in, a Montana Wilsonii.

Two of the round top trellis were made out of rebar by a friend of mine. I plan on putting green plastic covered wire loosely on the posts to give the clematis a place to climb. In addition to the roof I still have to re-do the house skirting but I left plenty of room to install that.

Depending on the weather I could be putting clematis in after Christmas. I certainly have plenty of them ready to go in!

Katie, that's going to be so beautiful all covered in clematis ! Great job ! WoW, you're amazing !
What's that one clematis I see already planted ? It's good sized and should climb quickly.
Thank you for showing us your work ! You're going to have to show us more pictures when it's planted and then another picture every year, so we can see the growth. I just love seeing good climbing places for clematis and I'm dying to see it when it's completed with clematis!

What fun! Imagine being able to work in winter! (Hard for me to understand with our ground frozen.) I'd love to be able to grow a Montana too. Keep us updated Katie. Hope you never need to paint that side of the house.

I agree with Gardenbug - to work outside in the winter! I love building myself, but not in this weather -- what are your daytime temps?

What "facing" is this side of the house -- N, S, E, W?

You live in the woods, too, like Suzy. What a setting!!!

Katie, how sad, now you need more clematis (grinning ever so big!)

Nice job Katie. Wilsonii is a great montana. It is just too cold for it here in our coldest winters. It is one of the latest blooming clematis. Now you need some summer bloomers. How about Summer Snow (Paul Farges), Duchess of Albany, Jackmanii, Etoile Violette, and of course, Viola. It is not necessary that you hard prune these in special situations. When visiting Portland, I saw an unpruned Etoile Violette that reached almost 30 feet into a tree and it was loaded with many hundreds of blooms. You could prune them to near the top of the uprights instead. Let them reach the top. If you want to get real fancy, you can grow some smaller varieties to cover the lower stems of the taller ones. Venosa Violacea and/or Prince Charles would be nice. This creative gardening can be fun.

Scilla, this side of the house faces south, that's why I want shade on those windows.

Oh yes, Bill, I have great plans. Probably several Type 1's across the back, Montanas to grow tall and hopefully swamp (!) the front of my yucky looking house. Then I will put some small Type 1's just in front of them to help cover the "legs". Across the front I'll put Type 3's on the two outside posts and Type 2's on the two inside posts. I will even have a Cirrhosa in the center of the large trellis snuggled against the house.

Yes, I know, I'll get too many clematis in there but I don't care, I want instant gratification! I will continue on with my layering/cutting program and get duplicates of everything to put in other places around the yard. My biggest problem is getting water to everything as I have to water all summer. I really need to get an underground system in for the clematis in the yard.

The day I finished this the weather was wonderful. I even stayed outside until a little past full dark working under lights. It was shirtsleeve weather, about 50 F.
