Can someone give me the Idiot's Guide to Pinching to encourage lateral growth? I have a bunch of Group 2s that I just planted last summer and they are basically just one long vine with a couple of side shoots here and there. I don't want to end up with a scraggly looking plant, so when and where should I pinch?

I have Toomey's books and read her info, but I am still managing to be confused.

Thanks much.

Many people do an early spring prune to ALL clematis (to about 12") in their first year or two to encourage a nicely formed plant. Others can't stand the delay in terms of blooms. Some people I know buy 3 plants and plant them 18" or so apart to achieve a bushier effect sooner. Other folks prune only a few stems, maybe half of them, so as to get both early and late blooms.
I don't pinch, I use secateurs.

An other good method is layering the shoots. So you get more plants together. It is an easy method.

To pinch or not to pinch, that is the question!
I prune my clematis in April. After a few weeks I remove the tops of the new growth with my finger tips, and continue to do so if I remember it, that is pinching-out. It can be very cold here in Sweden so the last two years the winter cold has done the pruning for me and all my clematis are treated like group 3 clematis.....
