for the poor photo, but he was quite a distance away. I spotted his tail feathers when he was at the bird feeder on the fir tree. By the time I grabbed the camera, he was on the power lines across the road. I think I've identified him, but wonder what you think? Can you make him out well enough? It was the best I could do.

Don't apologize, I would be proud of that shot. Unless a bird sits on the end of the camera and smiles, I have no chance.

Oooh that's a tough one, it's either a Coopers hawk or a Sharp Shinned. How big was the bird the size of a crow or a morning dove?

I should have mentioned that there was orange in his tail feathers. I saw the back of him at the feeder and thought he was much larger than any bird ( perhaps as long as a crow, but much wider) I'd seen at the feeder before. Of course, I ran for my camera and he was up on the line when I got back. I'm always wishing I had a better camera for these bird shots. I was wondering if you thought he might be a kestrel. I'll be keeping a sharper eye from now on.
We had a hawk swoop down to the feeder once, when we had the little deviated junco, a white one, and I was so worried about the little bird I didn't even check to see the colors on the hawk. The junco was fine.
So I am definitely a novice birder.
And thanks, Terry. I'll keep trying...

Hi Diane...do you get Merlins out there? They look like a Kestrel only bigger. They do go after small birds as well as mice and such. Here's a Merlin I photographed a few years ago to compare, a female I believe. They have big orange feet. In the meanwhile keep that camera handy-you'll get a closer photo yet!

Thanks, Carol. You may be right. And I'll keep the camera closer, because you just never know...

Carol,

That was my other guess but my book doesn't show defined stripes on the chest. I cannot wait to see future pictures.

In my book (Nat Geo) it shows not so much defined stripes as "joined together segments" if that makes any sense-lol.

Yes we will have to wait until Diane has a closer try for this bird to be sure. I was going on chiefly the over all shape of the bird in her photo and it put me in mind of a similar pose that I had taken. (posted above) By the behavior it could be Sharpie, Coopers, Merlin or Kestrel..but it seems a bit big for Kestrel.

I sent the photo to my pal Barry for his opin and he's 90% sure her bird is a Merlin, but will reserve that last 10% for a closer photo.

Diane, I have only had one try for a Merlin and that was the above photo back in 2002! Very exciting to see a Merlin in your yard. Hopefully he's eating more mice than little birds though! Keep that camera handy-we've got our fingers crossed for you!
