Has anyone had any experience with the Clematis Ascotiensis ? I am looking for a dark blue color in a type 3.

Curt, it is one of my favorites...a nice deep blue but I wouldn't consider it dark. It has been healthy and a good bloomer this season...I used it as a birthday card as you can see

Tanya, Thank you for sending the picture. What a neat card idea. Your picture does give me an idea of the actual color. It's a very pretty blue. I want to plant two of them next year. You don't have any experience with C. Rhapsody do you? I know it is a darker color.

Yes, I do Curt...that's darker and true to it's color description. I've been really happy with it so far. I have high hopes for it next season planted with Comtesse de Bouchaud as it's climbing mate. Here's Rhapsody... Ascotiensis and Rhapsody would be really lovely together...thanks for the idea!

WOW, what a great color of blue! It sounds like your clematis patch is sort of what I would like to create. I have a four-foot tall picket fence surrounding my back yard. Two weeks ago I planted two 'Perle d'Azur' plants because it appears to have a great medium blue color. I am going to alternate blue & white clematis plants. Hey, it’s a Kentucky thing. Thank you again for posting pictures of your beautiful C. plants.

I bet it will look beautiful. I have one blue and white combination I'm really happy about especially for next season. It's grown a lot lately and blooming quite nicely right now. This is clematises Kirigamine and Duchess of Edinbergh. I took it a couple days ago but now lots more are blooming. What do you think? Another Gardenbuddy mentioned that D. of E. was a huge wilter but I already had mine in the ground...here's hoping mine is the exception! Kirigamine is another beautiful blue and very floriferous...

Hi SunnyDay2Day,What a pretty picture! I have plans for Blue/Purple & White also. Do you happen to have a close of your Blue Clematis Kirigamine? It looks like a flower I have that I don't know the name of. I would love to post a picture but I am still have camera trouble. Hope I can by next week. Also your white one sure doesn't look like my Dutchess of Edinburgh. My first and second flowers are always double and the filaments are creamy white/yellow.Yours looks like the center is reddish? Who ever it is, it is very pretty! I like it better than my DOE. This spring I planted 200 babies and I am so surprised at how many are not who they were sold as. I know we all complain about getting mis-labeled Clematis but I see now that the problem starts in the first stages of childhood.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you HoneyB...my browser(?) wasn't showing me your post. Wow, my anthers and filaments appear creamy yellow on this end, especially the one on the bottom right. Here is Kirigamine. It wasn't widely distributed in our area...in fact, I found it way up north.
I feel your pain when it comes to mislabeled clems...guess most of us have gone through it.

Tanya, Great pictures! As a member of the microwave generation I’m ready for mine to be 8 ft tall & in full bloom—NOW! Two weeks ago I planted 2 Perle dAzure’s. I’m sick. One (about 10 inches tall) has two of the top leaves turning brown. I thought proper planting; a few words of encouragement & steroids would do the trick. We did get a lot of rain when the tale end of the hurricane came by. I picked up a nice Will Goodwin today for six dollars. Will put it in an area with other group 2’s. Thank you again for sharing pictures of your beautiful plants. I will TRY to be patient.

Curt, this time of year many of the clems have what I call 'brown out.' Actually the #3 pruning groups seem to get the least of it compared to the group 2s. The little bit of brown on your PdA will probably not be anything to be concerned about at all. I just planted one too less than a week ago...mine was somewhat anemic looking but I'm hoping it'll get it's root adjustment soon and feel right at home. Will Goodwin is a nice one but remember, twos are often wilters. It's not a foregone conclusion though, and I wouldn't let that stop me from buying one I was ga-ga over. I'm excited for you! Your interest in and love of clematis will grow with each new season.

Tanya, Yes, I am aware that type 2’s t run a greater chance of the dreaded wilt. That is why I am going for type 3’s on my picket fence & as many Viticellas as possible. (If they are the color I’m after) There a few type 2’s such as North Star, Kamilla, 'Lady Northcliffe and a couple of others, I just gotta have. I’m going to put the 2’s in a separate area. The internet & forums like this have been a great source of information. This is my first year & you’re right, I’m hooked on Clematis. Thank you for your assistance.
