This large plant starts with flowers in this month. The flowers are bigger as rehderiana but not in that quantity.

The more I see the different species the more I like them. One day I'll understand the different groups, it's confusing but fun learning!

Ton, finally had a germination of buchananiana in June. At least, I hope it is buchananiana, because that's what the collector of the seed thought it was when it was gathered. The seed was from the Chadwell 2000 expedition in Kailash Himalaya, and took a lot longer than expected to germinate (in fact it was a second sowing, and then, only a single seedling.) The connata-types I have germinated in the past (connata, rehderiana, confusa, aethusifolia) have all taken 30-100 days to germinate; this one waited for 485 days, why it should have taken so long I'm not sure! Anyway, the field notes accompanying read: "Pale yellow flowers, fragrant, in many-flowered panicles; sepals with recurved tips, tomentose on both sides; leaves pinnate, leaflets broadly ovate to almost orbicular, pubescent to tomentose beneath; this form approaches C. grewiiflora in the density of the tomentum".
The leaves on this young seedling are ternate so far, not pinnate. However I am not worried about that at this stage, as it often happens that juvenile foliage gradually gives way to adult foliage in time, and GW says there are forms which have ternate leaves, too. If pinnate leaves are going to show, it will be fairly soon on this seedling. It's great to raise seed from such sources because you can try to guess the ID as the plant develops and then eventually flowers. This nice and healthy one should hopefully flower next year. It's quite likely that it will take a further couple of years after that in order to be able to assess any fragrance.

I like this plant so much Ton, the flowers are beautiful - I have seeds sown, so I hope to have one myself one day.

I just love your pictures, Ton. We learn so much about all the different and unusual clematis of the world ! My Rehderiana is still small, but I look forward to a profusion of first flowers next year. Your Clematis buchaniana is very nice and is a real 'prize' to have in your garden. Suzy
