(to the theme of Dragnet) Yesterday I potted up the first of my seedlings (18) that germinated earlier this spring. What am I gonna do!? Where are they gonna go!? How far will this abberation take me!?

I certainly recognize the problem but haven't found any solutions so far. (Perhaps winter will kill off some of them.)

Katie, with your mild winters, your seedlings should survive in pots outdoors quite well, seeing that mine made it through a bitterly cold winter here. I found that young clematis are much hardier than we think ! Just mulch the pots very well. I leave my older seedlings in pots outdoors in a large cold-frame/plastic greenhouse. As the plants mature to 1-2 years old some will be tossed and others planted or given away. I keep most of my seedlings until I eventually see flowers. The plants you don't want will make great gifts to visitors to your garden ! For instance, I have Lasurstern seedlings which had lovely flowers, but were too similar to their parent to be of use to me. My dear sister just loves the "freebies" I bring her ! Only the real weaklings get tossed. If I have 'very tiny' seedlings under 5 months old, I will raise them inside on my sunniest windowsill (little sun) with a sprinkling of gravel to cover. My Prince Charles seedlings were wintered inside, then placed outdoors in May. They exploded with growth and flowers by the end of June. I was pleasantly surprised at the fact that they did so well, having been 'wintered over' inside the house. I have poor light conditions indoors, but seedlings seem to enjoy the low to moderate light. You might want to try try this for the very smallest of your seedlings and place the older seedlings outdoors covered with mulch as I did. Congratulations on your seedlings ! What do you have up ?
