I got a Pixie as a present from my son and DIL earlier in the season and of course hadn't the heart to tell them that Pixie is not a hardy clematis. They were so proud of the gift. Which is the best way to try to overwinter it? Have no greenhouse, no garage and no cellar....... Have a small summer house but there's no heat.

Pixi is a problem. This year I did not buy them but had some from last year and also Early Sensation and Cartmanni Joe. I can not sell them because they never become as they were when you buy them. I think you can keep the plant outdoors till - 2 C and then I should put it in the summerhouse and controll there how cold it becomes.Do not give much water . If it is very cold I should put the plant with the pot in another pot sothat there comes air between it and should cover the plant if it is cold. In daytime you can put it outdoors Put it not to low and not to high Is it not possible to put the plant in Boras ??Is there no cellar or a storeroom where it is not warm ?

I wish I could offer a solution to your problem. The only thing I can think of would be a very cool room, if you have such a thing. Those non-hardy evergreen clematis are also sold here in almost every garden centre, with no mention of their special needs. Some weeks ago in a nursery I saw a young couple excitedly choosing plants for what was obviously their first garden. The nursery-owner sold them Early Sensation, saying it was just like the other clematis, only evergreen. I suppose I should have said something.

Thank you for the tips Roelie. Sorry to hear that about Pixie. But I have to wait and see and try..... We have a small store house but I think it's too warm there. Maybe I can place Pixie in an attic and wrap it. Mara! It's the same thing here in Sweden. The nurseries sell clematis that we can't grow in our gardens without information about it. I think this is one of the factors which contributes to that clematis becomes less popular. The other factors are wilt and mildew according to the nurseries around here.
