was discovered when I was out walking around the yard and was checking to see if my C. florida 'Sieboldii' had gotten nipped back by some of our 27 degree nights we have had within the last week. Not only had it not been nipped but I was examining the plant and noticed that it was setting flower buds. I am sure that these will eventually get frozen off before opening but I was just so shocked and elated to see them anyway. Who knows, I may just have to construct a protection blanket and see if I can actually get the blooms to survive and bloom this year. Fingers crossed here!!!

Jeanne, this was a plant that I purchased and received in September that was quart sized. Based on some reading I had done in reference books, the C. florida species are ones that are not recommended for fall planting due to their tenderness. As a result, I potted the plant intending to overwinter it inside this year and planting it out next spring. But the end of October, I decided I was going to experiment and plant it out then. I was just really surprised to see that the plant hadn't been frosted on much less had blooms. The next few days we are expected to be in the upper 60s to low 70's and above freezing at night. Who knows how long that might last.

Kvilledude,

That's great, my Florida is still blooming and I'm in zone 6. It is sheltered on the east side of my house walls. Under the eves still in a 2 gallon pot. It gets morning and some noonday sun.

My other clems there are still blooming that are meant to bloom in Autumn.

Sieboldii has an amazingly long flowering season. A couple of weeks ago a friend's sieboldii began showing buds (I have taken photos but not had the chance to get them off the camera yet). Which makes it even more amazing if you think in terms of the fact that somewhere in the world sieboldii is always in flower. I hope those buds survive to open.

Thanks John. I will post pictures if the plant gets to flowering stage prior to a killing frost.

Thanks for the pictures John. Are the stamens and pistils more purple in color than your pictures show or they more brown in color?

Lovely, John ! It's nice to see something blooming now.
Miguel, I would think that where you are you shouldn't have to worry too much about planting your Fl. Sieboldii out in the fall.

Miguel the stamens are quite dark purple, the colour is reasonably true I think though maybe a little dark. They will probably get a bit lighter after they've been open for longerthough from memory of last year's blooms this plant does have quite a dark purple centre. When I look at pictures of sieboldii on the web they do seem to have a lighter centre as this
Plant Forumpicture shows. I'll keep an eye out to see how the plant here changes as the flowers age.

Thanks John. I figured it was just the lighting on the picture.

Suzy, the only reason I was worried about planting it out in the fall is because in several of the books I have, it is listed as one of the tender clematis and it was highly suggested not to plant it in the fall. This whole topic came up a while back when the issue of whether to plant in fall or spring was the preferred time. It was then that I actually looked up information on the best planting time for clematis and came across the references which included any of the florida species as ones that are better planted in the spring. Hopefully, all will go well with the planting and it will flower before a hard frost kills it back. Fingers crossed here!!!
