Last August I was in Winnipeg at the gardens in Asiniboine park. I found this growing there which looks like a type of clematis. I'm wondering if you experts could help me identify it.

Looks like a tangutica but I'm not sure of the variety...it sort of looks like Radar Love.

Definitely a Tangutica... I just bought one and that is the exact pic that was on the tag... Its called Golden Harvest. Interesting note... I bought mine at a garden center in Winnipeg! I haven't gone to see the gardens there though. I am a 7-8 hr drive north of Winnipeg so I don't get down there too often, but then again I have only just lived here since July so I will probably have many more opportunities to go see them. How tall was that obelisk? That will give me an idea if I planted it in a good spot or if I will have to move it somewhere else. Ohhh and BTW... I am far from an expert...

I grow tangutica subsp mongolica which looks like this:
It climbs several meters taller than me against our barn...and seeds around too. It blooms in August.

That obelisk is more than 3 meters high. This plant looks huge and it was growing back down the darn thing.

Hallo Greg! I would guess it is a "Bill Mackenzie" which (in my opinion) is one of the best in The Orientalis Group. I had it for many years - and it was probably about 5 meters high here - but it took up too much space and I had to cut it back to the ground one year - and it did never came back again. You can do this with for inst. old alpinas, but "Bill" felt offended. I have never had time to build up a new one. It was before my digital photo-time so I have only an old (not too good) picture of it. This one:

I believe to that it is a Bill Mackenzie. If plants grow to high I cut the half off the plant and over the other half I cut the twigs a 1/4

Yes Roelie - that is probably a good way. I have also tried to take 1/3 complete down one year and an other 1/3 next year and the last 1/3 the third year (complete change of the plant over three years) and this also works well.

Has the plant real thick tepals? "Bill Mackenzie" has real thick tepals. "Bill Mackenzie"
